He’s one of a reported 39 cuts that the Mets made on Thursday. Rumbelow, 28, holds a 5.97 ERA over 33 appearances across parts of three big league campaigns.

Rumbelow was with the Mariners briefly earlier this season and more recently was pitching for the independent league Sugar Land Skeeters. He’s merely a depth add.

Rumbelow was designated for assignment off the 40-man roster near the end of May, but elected to pitch for Triple-A Tacoma rather than pursue free agency. He owns a 5.97 ERA in 33 relief appearances with the Yankees and Mariners, and was really struggling with the Rainiers in 2019 with an 8.17 mark.

Rumbelow was pushed off the 40-man roster last Friday after allowing four earned runs in 1 1/3 innings spanning three appearances with the Mariners. The 27-year-old right-hander will work on his craft against lesser competition and try to climb back to Seattle at some point later this summer.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Andrew Moore. Rumbelow holds a 5.97 ERA in 33 relief appearances at the big league level and has really struggled in the minors this year, too, so he could pass through waivers.

Rumbelow earned his first career save on Saturday against the Red Sox, but he’ll head down to the minors to open up a spot for Connor Sadzeck, who was acquired from the Rangers on Monday.

Swarzak missed most of spring training with a lingering issue in his shoulder, but he’s feeling good now and recently pitched in four minor league games. The Mariners’ closer situation is wide open with Hunter Strickland sidelined, so Swarzak is a legitimate threat for saves if he proves his health and effectiveness. He’s coming off a nightmare season with the Mets, but he was great in 2017. Cory Gearrin, Chasen Bradford, and Nick Rumbelow are among the alternatives, which isn’t the most inspiring group.

He won’t need surgery, but a Grade 2 strain is going to result in Strickland being sidelined for “at least a couple months,” per Mariners manager Scott Servais. Anthony Swarzark (shoulder) is slated to be activated from the injured list Tuesday and would figure to be the favorite for saves once he gets up to speed. In the meantime, Nick Rumbelow, Zac Rosscup, Cory Gearrin and Matt Festa are names to speculate on if you’re really desperate.

Rumbelow was summoned to record the final out of the ninth inning and preserve a two-run lead after Zac Rosscup was victimized by a pair of errors at third base. After the third error of the frame allowed another run to cross the plate, Rumbelow struck out Xander Bogaerts to end the threat. The 27-year-old righty could be in the mix for a few more save chances with Hunter Strickland on the injured list, but it appears as if the Mariners are going with a pure committee approach to fill the void. Fantasy owners should speculate elsewhere.

The move adds a 40-man roster spot for Eric Young Jr. Rumbelow is out for the season following Tommy John surgery.
