Nik Turley pitched a scoreless ninth in a two-run game for his first major league save Thursday in the second game of the doubleheader against the Cardinals.
Congratulations to Turley, a 2008 50th-round pick of the Yankees. Before making the Pirates last month, his only previous major league action saw him post an 11.21 ERA in three starts and seven relief appearances for the Twins in 2017. Turley has a 3.18 ERA this year, but his 9/7 K/BB in 11 1/3 innings isn’t so encouraging. He’s as much of a candidate for saves as anyone in Pittsburgh’s pen right now, but we still wouldn’t suggest rushing to pick him up.
