Free agent TE Rico Gathers worked out for the Packers on Tuesday.
The Pack, who were probably just updating their emergency list, also hosted TEs Cole Wick and Ethan Wolf. Gathers has been waived by two teams since early August. Despite his athletic profile, it just isn’t happening for the 25-year-old.
  • FA Tight End
    Browns waived TE Rico Gathers.
Signed in August, Gathers failed to play a single down for the Browns since he was suspended for Week 1. Still having a measly total of just three catches and 45 yards under his belt, it’s unlikely he pans out as anything more than a practice squad signee or late-season injury fill-in for 2019.
  • FA Tight End
    Browns signed TE Rico Gathers.
TE/FB Orson Charles was cut in the corresponding roster move. Gathers was on the market a little less than a week following his release from Dallas. A former college basketball star at Baylor, Gathers has yet to pan out in the NFL, logging a mere three catches for 45 yards over 146 career snaps. He’ll hope to make the squad as a blocking complement to starter David Njoku.
  • FA Tight End
    Cowboys waived TE Rico Gathers.
A 2016 sixth-round pick after playing basketball, Gathers was entering the final year of his rookie deal and had made zero regular-season impact to this point in his career. He had a strong 2017 preseason, but it never translated to real games. The 25-year-old has three career catches across 15 appearances. Perhaps he’ll get another shot elsewhere. Gathers has already been suspended for Week 1.
  • FA Tight End
NFL suspended TE Rico Gathers one game for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.
Gathers was arrested for marijuana possession last September. This could actually help his roster chances, as the Cowboys won’t have to make a decision on him until Week 2. Even if Gathers keeps his spot, he’s likely going to be returning behind Jason Witten, Blake Jarwin, and Dalton Schultz.
  • FA Tight End
Cowboys TE Rico Gathers reached a deal on his misdemeanor drug charge.
Gathers was arrested last September. As part of the deal, Gathers will get 90-days deferred adjudication and pay a $99 fine and court costs. It is a minor legal situation, but Gathers could end up facing a suspension.
  • FA Tight End
Rico Gathers was held without a catch on one target in the Cowboys’ Divisional Round loss to the Rams.
Gathers muffed his lone look. Rumored to be a playmaker, Gathers was instead asked to bulk up to 282 pounds to improve his blocking. That’s what he did on the majority of his 146 snaps this season, catching only three passes. Gathers turned 25 earlier in January.
  • FA Tight End
Rico Gathers wasn’t targeted in the Cowboys’ Week 12 win over the Redskins.
Geoff Swaim broke his wrist last week, opening a hole at tight end. Gathers still can’t get involved for some reason. He played 15-of-70 snaps but wasn’t targeted and played behind both Blake Jarwin and rookie Dalton Schultz. Gathers hasn’t been targeted since Week 7. He’s miles away from fantasy relevance. Jarwin led the tight ends with two catches for 25 yards.
  • FA Tight End
Cowboys TE Rico Gathers is active for Week 2 against the Giants.
Gathers will make his regular season debut after being a healthy scratch last week. The Cowboys will be without DE Randy Gregory (concussion), but are mostly healthy on defense. Also inactive are QB Mike White, S Xavier Woods, DE Datone Jones, C Travis Frederick, OG Xavier Su’a-Filo, and TE Dalton Schultz.

Cowboys signed No. 217 overall pick TE Rico Gathers to a four-year contract.
At Baylor, Gathers was a First Team All-Big 12 selection in basketball. He hasn’t played football since middle school but his size and athleticism intrigued the Cowboys enough to spend a late-round flier on him. The Cowboys have now signed six of their nine draft picks.
