“With Roc, what I’ve seen is a guy who’s missed football,” Joseph said. “He’s missed a year of football, but you can see the physical tools. ... I’m expecting Roc to play better in camp.” Joseph’s comments don’t exactly bode well for a fourth-round reach who was also injury prone in college. Even if Carmichael keeps his roster spot, he won’t make an impact in Houston’s secondary.

Also injury prone at Virginia Tech, Carmichael missed all of preseason and Week 1 with the lingering shoulder ailment. A reach as a fourth-round pick in April’s draft, Carmichael will return to compete for a roster spot in 2011.

Instead of shifting impressive yet undersized slot corner Brandon Boykin outside, they left him in his natural position and gave Carmichael a shot. It turned out to be a wise plan. Carmichael handled himself well and Boykin was able to contain Jordy Nelson in the slot. “I thought Roc did a really nice job,” coach Chip Kelly said. “We’ve been really impressed with him. He’s come along.”

Carmichael was briefly on the Eagles’ roster last season, but hasn’t appeared in a regular-season game since 2013. He’ll try to latch on elsewhere as a camp body.

Carmichael takes Earl Wolff’s spot on the roster. The 2011 fourth-round pick of the Texans spent some time with the Eagles last season when Bradley Fletcher was banged up.

Carmichael was forced into two starts for the Eagles last season after getting scooped off the Texans’ practice squad. He’s a fringe NFL talent.

Carmichael struggled throughout the preseason and was released by the Eagles during final cuts. He would provide veteran depth if signed. Rashean Mathis, Darius Slay, and Bill Bentley are Detroit’s top-three corners.

Carmichael has NFL-reedy speed, but is a bit undersized, and is expected to struggle in run support. However, he notched 10 combined interceptions over his final two seasons at Virginia Tech, and has excellent instincts. Carmichael could be an early contributor in new DC Wade Phillips’ system.
