Armenteros will test the free agent waters in search of a new opportunity after being cut loose by the Nationals earlier this week. The 27-year-old righty, who was in contention for a rotation spot back in spring training, posted an uninspiring 6.08 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 42/25 K/BB ratio across 40 innings (10 appearances, nine starts) at Triple-A Rochester this season.

Armenteros cleared waivers after being designated for assignment and will remain in the organization.

The move clears him from the 40-man roster. Armenteros has struggled with a 5.83 ERA over seven starts in Triple-A this year.

Armenteros is slated to be examined by a doctor soon. The right-hander is in the mix for the fifth spot in the Nationals’ rotation and any physical setback would obviously be detrimental.

Fedde would seem to have the inside track after occupying Stephen Strasburg’s rotation spot last year, but he’ll need to hold off Ross and Voth in camp. The 27-year-old righty registered a respectable 4.29 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 28/22 K/BB ratio across 50 1/3 innings over 11 appearances (eight starts). Armenteros, who was claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks this offseason, is the wild card in the competition. He missed the entire 2020 season after undergoing surgery to remove a bone spur in his right elbow. It’s a position battle worth watching closely for fantasy managers in NL-only formats.
