Cordell was hitting .198/.292/.411 with 12 homers and eight steals at Triple-A Lehigh Valley prior to his release earlier this week. The 29-year-old outfielder logged five games with the Mets during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.

The deal was actually listed on the transactions page of MiLB.com late last month, though he’s yet to appear in a game. The 29-year-old appeared in five games with the Mets last year and holds a weak .202/.263/.328 batting line over 295 plate appearances in the majors. However, he can play all three outfield positions and could work as a bench player in a pinch.

The move clears a spot for the newly-claimed Robel García off waivers. Cordell appeared in five games with the Mets this season while going 1-for-8.

He’s taking the place of the injured Andres Gimenez on the Mets roster for the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader. The 28-year-old is a career .205/.267/.333 hitter with eight homers and 28 RBI in 291 plate appearances at the big league level.

Cordell cleared waivers after being designated for assignment. He’ll remain in the organization as part of the 60-man player pool.

The move clears a 40-man roster spot for right-hander Ariel Jurado, who was acquired from the Rangers on Wednesday afternoon. Cordell, 28, is a career .205/.267/.333 hitter at the major league level.

Cordell will give the club some more outfield depth with Jake Marisnick (hamstring) banged up. He doesn’t figure to play much.

Cordell was apparently released at some point since spring training, but now he’s back in the fold. He’s going to join the Mets’ player pool to serve as outfield depth. The 28-year-old batted .221/.290/.355 with seven home runs and 24 RBI in 247 plate appearances with the White Sox last year.

Cordell was playing today because of Brandon Nimmo’s heart issue. Everyone appears hopeful that Nimmo is fine, but Cordell, who arrived in a minor league deal last month, gives the team another fallback in center to go along with Jake Marisnick.

The former highly-touted prospect struggled at the dish last year with the White Sox, slashing a paltry .221/.290/.355 with seven home runs and 24 RBI in 247 plate appearances. Cordell will serve as organizational depth for the Mets, who already have plenty of outfield options at the major league level.
