Coach Herm Edwards declined to specify what they were. Edwards also said New York’s new defense is not designed for Ellis to make as many plays, thus explaining his low output (10 tackles, .5 sacks) so far.

Rumors say Ellis could earn a signing bonus of $14 million or more.

No word on the severity of the injury. Ellis, playing for a new contract, is having a solid season.

He’ll receive close to $15 million in guaranteed money, much of it coming after this third and fourth seasons.

Now that the Jets have him signed long-term, John Abraham will be the next target for their D-line.

The Patriots lost Mark Anderson and are waiting for free agent Andre Carter to make progress in his recovery from a torn quad, but they don’t want the 35-year-old Ellis back as even bargain-basement depth. Ellis lost his starting job early last season, and is far from guaranteed of cracking anybody’s Week 1 roster.

The Globe believes Carter might even be willing to give the Patriots a bit of a hometown discount. Fellow free agent DE/OLB Mark Anderson is considered more likely to walk, but the Globe concedes it’s a “very interesting situation that no one really has a read on.” Free agent DE Shaun Ellis is not expected back.

Ellis entered the season as an early-down starter, only to lose his job to Brandon Deaderick down the stretch. Turning 35 in June, the respected veteran won’t be back with the Patriots in 2012.
