Texans promoted S Shiloh Keo from their practice squad.
A favorite of NFL Network draft guru Mike Mayock, Keo is a gung-ho special teams prospect. He will take injured S Dominique Barber’s spot on the roster.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak said FS Ed Reed (hip) “won’t start,” but could play in Monday night’s opener against San Diego.
Reed practiced on a limited basis this week and is a game-time decision. The Texans will use him in a situational role if he manages to avoid being inactive. Shiloh Keo will start at free safety in Week 1 and get the majority of snaps.
  • FA Defensive Back #49
Texans FS Shiloh Keo will start on Monday night against San Diego.
With Ed Reed (hip) a game-time decision, the Texans will be forced to start Keo in their base 3-4 defense. Reed hasn’t been ruled out for Week 1, but will be reduced to a limited role if active.
  • FA Defensive Back #22
Coach Gary Kubiak said he thinks FS Ed Reed (hip) is “really close.”
Reed sat out Monday night’s opener and remains day to day. Backup Shiloh Keo handled himself well, recording three tackles and one pass breakup while grading out 12th among 70 qualifying safeties in ProFootballFocus’ grades. Consider Reed questionable for Sunday’s game against the Titans.
  • FA Defensive Back #22
Appearing on GameDay Morning, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Texans FS Ed Reed (hip) is unlikely to play versus the Titans on Sunday.
Reed was shaping up as a game-time decision, but it appears he’s going to miss his second straight game to open the season. Reed was going to be limited to nickel duties even if he did play. Shiloh Keo will get the start.
  • FA Defensive Back #22
Coach Gary Kubiak said Texans FS Ed Reed (hip) is “as close to playing as [he] has been.”
Reed remains questionable for Sunday’s Game against his former team, the Ravens. Backup Shiloh Keo has graded out as PFF’s No. 44 safety among 79 qualifiers through two weeks.
  • FA Defensive Back #22
Texans FS Ed Reed (hip) will play and start Sunday’s Week 3 game against the Ravens.
It’s fitting that Reed’s Texans debut comes in Baltimore against his former teammates. He practiced in full all week and is expected to play a majority of snaps, sending Shiloh Keo back to the bench. It’s the first time we will have seen the 35-year-old Reed on the field since the Super Bowl.

Ed Reed was scheduled to receive more injections in his hip Monday.
The doctor that performed Reed’s hip surgery is getting one more look at his patient. With the regular season just two weeks away, the future Hall of Famer still hasn’t practiced. “The question is, is he going to be ready right off the get-go?” coach Gary Kubiak said. “That’s something that’s got to get sorted out here pretty quickly. But you’ve got to understand our approach. Our whole training camp has been without him, so the team’s not going to panic.” Shiloh Keo is Reed’s backup.
  • FA Defensive Back #22
Texans FS Ed Reed (hip) is reportedly very doubtful for Monday night’s game against the Chargers.
Reed has been able to participate in a couple of closed practices this week, suggesting he’s progressing well. CBS’ Jason La Canfora says the future Hall of Famer “should be back soon.” Shiloh Keo is in line to draw the start at free safety come Monday night.

NFL suspended Broncos S Shiloh Keo two games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
Keo was arrested for DUI last February and pleaded guilty in early July. He is a core special teams player for Denver and a useful reserve safety.
