Sunderland, frankly, needed this.

The Black Cats have been performing better and better in recent weeks, but couldn’t find the necessary finish to climb closer to Premier League safety.

They found that finish and then some on Saturday at a perfect time, belting three goals past Norwich City in a critical relegation 6-pointer at Carrow Road.

Manager Sam Allardyce has never been relegated as a manager, and was thrilled after Fabio Borini, Jermain Defoe and Duncan Watmore scored in a 3-0 win.

He was more thrilled by the zero on the board and the visiting fans.

“That all-important clean sheet was a key element in our victory today. We defended hard.”

“We sold every single ticket we could get and we’re sending the fans home happy. That long journey back won’t seem as long now.

The win was even more important given the Black Cats remaining four games, as they’ll need to earn more points than Norwich while playing Stoke, Everton, Arsenal and Chelsea.
