The winter World Cup that was Qatar 2022 means less time to prep for 2026 in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, so don’t be surprised to see CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying back on your screens this fall, less than one year since Argentina beat France to the 2022 crown.
The gauntlet that is CONMEBOL qualifying has eased a bit with the expanded, 48-team field for the 2026 World Cup; Six teams will qualify automatically and a seventh will reach the six team inter-confederation playoff tournament.

That expanded field means Argentina is already well on its way to a World Cup return, as Lionel Messi has been in fine form and Nicolas Otamendi scored a huge winner against Brazil to move the Albiceleste on to 15 points to start qualifying. The sixth-place team in CONMEBOL qualifying has averaged a total of around 23 points over the past six tournaments.
But Brazil is another story, taking just one point from Venezuela, Uruguay and Colombia after opening with two wins, and now losing at home to Argentina. And Neymar left the pitch on a stretcher and in tears following an injury in the loss to Darwin Nunez and Uruguay last month. That leaves the Selecao in fifth place with seven points, eight back of Argentina, after losing to Luis Diaz’s inspired day for Colombia and then Argentina.
Below you’ll find the table, schedule, and scores for all CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers, as South America sorts out who will compete to become the 11th winner from its confederation, joining Uruguay (1930, 1950), Brazil (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002), and Argentina (1978, 1986, 2022) as world champions.
