David Beckham hopeful for Sunday, but status still iffy
David Beckham man or may not be available for Sunday’s contest against Colorado. Not that an iffy status for the league’s top draw is anything new to the fans in Colorado.
Beckham has a odd and somewhat turbulent relationship with Denver, where he was once introduced ceremonially to Major League Soccer.
Back in 2007, during the MLS All-Star game at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, Beckham’s splashy halftime interview on ESPN was among the evening highlights. He was signed, sealed and almost ready to start swinging that right foot for the Galaxy, but wasn’t on the field just yet for the club.
Still, Beckham made headlines by making the scene in suburban Commerce and watching from the commissioner’s box, and everybody was pretty giddy about that.
Problem was, Beckham’s appearance record around Denver turned spotty at best afterward. In fact, the man appeared just once in five subsequent Galaxy visits to face Colorado, in 2008, when Galaxy fell to the Rapids, 4-0.
Beckham was definitely on patrol last April when the Galaxy earned a dramatic 2-1 win over Colorado. He was front and center in that one for a number of reasons, some good and some not so much.
Now he’s back at training (as we talked about yesterday) and hoping to be on the field Sunday in Colorado. But it still looks iffy. What he told MLSSoccer.com on Thursday:
