According to ESPN, Jozy Altidore will be looking to switch clubs in the January transfer window if his playing time situation at Sunderland does not improve.
This season Altidore has made six appearances for the Wearside club, scoring one goal in the League Cup loss against Stoke City. The decrease in playing time has been due to the US international’s return from a devastating hamstring injury suffered against Ghana in this summer’s World Cup, as well as the current form of first-choice strikers Steven Fletcher and Connor Wickham.
Last season Altidore struggled to fit in at Sunderland, scoring just two goals in 37 total appearances. It was a disappointing output for the American, having come over to the Premier League on a $13 million transfer from Dutch side AZ where he scored 23 goals in 33 Eredivisie matches in 2012-13.
“I thought I’ve done everything I could this season to come in fit, and get as fit as possible with the injury, and try and make an impact when I played,” Altidore told reporters Wednesday. “Jurgen [Klinsmann] makes his messages very clear, and nobody is different. If it doesn’t turn around, in January then I’ll be looking to start elsewhere, and make sure I’m in his plans going forward.”
Altidore and the US team face Ecuador on Friday night before he returns to England for the October 18th match against Southampton.
