Linked with a move to Barcelona and Manchester United throughout the summer, German defender Mats Hummels is now being lined up by Arsenal.
That’s according to reports from the Daily Express in the UK, as the World Cup winner looks to move away from Borussia Dortmund after the Bundesliga outfit have suffered a stuttering start to the season.
Hummels, 25, seemed to be towards the top of Louis van Gaal’s shopping list in the summer but United instead plumped for Marcos Rojo at center back. That’s not to say the Red Devils still aren’t interested by the towering defender who scored twice en route to lifting the World Cup with the German national team and he was named in the team of the tournament.
Arsenal hope to jump ahead of United and other potential suitors for Hummels, with Arsene Wenger still struggling for options in central defense.
This weekend against Hull City the Gunners are without Calum Chambers and Laurent Koscielny and only have Per Mertesacker as a recognized and established center back. It’s an area the Frenchman knows he need to strengthen in and a bid of $50 million would be just about enough to tempt Dortmund to sell.
BVB’s manager Jurgen Klopp has previously stated his reluctance to sell Hummels but after four defeats in their opening seven games of the season, Dortmund could be in for a season of struggle and Hummels may look to jump ship in January.
The next few months will be incredibly interesting as Arsenal try to tempt Hummels away from the Bundesliga and to the Premier League.
