Sad news arrived on Saturday, as Wolfsburg’s Belgian midfielder Junior Malanda has been killed in a car crash.

Malanda, 20, has represented Belgium at every youth level and joined the Bundesliga outfit in 2013 from Belgian side Zulte Waregem.

According to German outlet Bild, Malanda was sat in the back seat of an SUV which police say was travelling at excessive speed when it crashed at 3:35 p.m. CET on Saturday.

More details on the crash have since emerged, as the car is said to have flipped over the guardrail and Malanda was flung from the car before the vehicle finished up on its roof.

Malanda reportedly died at the scene, while two other passengers in the car were seriously injured. The promising Belgian player was due to fly to South Africa on Saturday night to link up with Wolfsburg on their winter tour.

Some of Malanda’s Wolfsburg teammates have taken to Twitter to pay their respects. Here’s a message from his fellow countryman Kevin De Bruyne.
