San Jose Earthquakes, Wondolowski: taking care of business

Goal leadership

San Jose is not doing its part to make the final six rounds of Major League Soccer regular season play very interesting.

We plan to have a word with coach Frank Yallop about that.

The Earthquakes could still collapse and make the Western Conference race and Supporters Shield chase something interesting – but does anybody really see that happening?

They keep dutifully taking care of business. Last night’s 2-0 win at Chivas USA is the latest evidence.

Chivas did enough in the run of play to press the visitors, but San Jose took their chances and made the most of a controversial penalty kick decision.

Speaking of that penalty kick: Chris Wondolowski put it away confidently and now has a comfortable chokehold on the league’s Golden Boot chase. That was his 19th goal of 2012, and it would take a big night of multiple goals from one of the pursuers to add any real pressure on the Earthquakes sniper.

Thierry Henry or Eddie Johnson (both on 13 goals) have the best chance at something like that, but it looks like an increasingly long shot.

Here are the highlights from last night’s win for the visitors at the Home Depot Center:
