Tottenham 1-0 Middlesbrough: Spurs strengthen standing

Heung-Min Son was an 80-minute menace and Harry Kane converted a penalty kick as Tottenham Hotspur beat Middlesbrough 1-0 at White Hart Lane on Saturday.
The win keeps Spurs second in the Premier League table, nine points back of Chelsea, and they’ll finish the weekend there.
Middlesbrough has 21 points, the same as Leicester City and Swansea City. Boro is one point ahead of 18th place Hull City.

Alvaro Negredo slashed a chance over the net for Middlesbrough’s only chance of the first 10 minutes, and Dele Alli’s in-tight miss was more emblematic of the early goings.
Spurs had control, and maybe should’ve been up a man after Dele was shoved in the face and back of the neck by Boro backstop Victor Valdes.
Harry Kane’s flying header flew over the net off Heung-Min Son’s strong left-footed cross in the 35th minute.
Kane thumped a Son cross home six minutes later, but the English striker was offside.

Son ended up setting up Kane in a different way for the match’s opener, winning a penalty kick off Bernardo.
Christian Eriksen came close to making it 2-0 moments later, but Valdes parried the hard shot away from the goal.
Son received a loud ovation from the WHL faithful when he departed for Moussa Sissoko in the 81st minute.
Alvaro Negredo nearly beat Hugo Lloris with an overhead kick off Fabio service, but it bounded wide of the far post. And Negredo turned provider for a would-be stoppage time equalizer than Maarten de Roon missed off the side of the netting.
