VIDEO: Steven Gerrard calls reports of rift with Brendan Rodgers “nonsense”

When you make 453 starts for a club, it follows that a place on the bench becomes big news, even if it shouldn’t.

The English papers exploded into all kinds of wild accusations after Brendan Rodgers left Steven Gerrard on the bench for Liverpool’s narrow 1-0 win over Stoke City on Saturday, which was the 16th anniversary of his Liverpool debut.

Gerrard has looked to dispel those to the best of his ability, taking to social media to write, “Just to set the record straight media talk of a fall out between us 2 is NONSENSE ..have a nice Sunday.”

Some papers claimed there was a falling out between manager and captain, while others went a step further to say Gerrard was preparing to leave Anfield. In the end, the accusations are completely misguided. Gerrard is 34 years old, and it’s not shocking he would be rested for a weekend Premier League fixture just three days after playing a full 90 minutes on the road in a Champions League match in Bulgaria.

The lifelong Red eventually came on as a substitute against Stoke, entering the fray in the 75th minute, and was on the pitch for Glen Johnson’s winner.

Gerrard has undoubtedly been in poor form this season, and has shown a bit of his age, but to suggest things are falling apart between him and a manager who has done nothing but speak highly of his captain is a bit of a stretch.
