Steelers signed Texas A&M DL Tyree Johnson.
Johnson (6’2/248) was named to the SEC All-Freshman team in 2018 before joining the starting lineup in 2019, where he averaged 24 pressures, 26 tackles, 6.5 TFLs, and four sacks over the next two seasons. He really emerged last year, leading the team in sacks with 8.5 to go with 31 tackles, 26 pressures, and 9 TFLs. He didn’t do much in the way of testing besides the jumping drills thanks to a knee issue, fishing with a woeful 3.49 relative athletic score. He displays impressive burst and bend running the hoop, preferring to outmaneuver opposing tackles rather than overpower them. He lacks counters when linemen latch onto him and isn’t a difference-maker against the run. He can get enveloped easily by skilled tackles due to his abnormally short arms, extinguishing his rush before it starts. Johnson is going to face an uphill battle to earn meaningful playing time given his lack of size and athletic gifts.
