As South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier continues to knock down talk that he’ll be retiring, a reader has forwarded to us an odd report from Phil Kornblut, a reporter who routinely covers the Gamecocks. In a blurb regarding the decision of senior receiver Freddie Brown, Jr. to transfer to a new school, Kornblut mentions that, according to Brown’s father, “non-starting rising seniors on the team are being encouraged to look for new programs.”
As expected, Georgia running back Knowshon Moreno and quarterback Matt Stafford are leaving the school with eligibility remaining, and entering the NFL draft.”
Quarterback Matt Simms, the son of former NFL quarterback Phil Simms, is leaving the University of Louisville, according to Brian Bennett of ESPN.com.The younger Simms opted to stick with Louisville after former coach Bobby Petrino jumped to the Falcons. But Simms was suspended four games during the 2008 season, for violating team rules.Simms was expected to enter spring practice as the starter. It leaves the team with no quarterbacks having game experience, and the competition for the starting job is expected to wide open.Bennett reports that Simms might enroll in a junior college.
As expected, Boston College has fired head football coach Jeff Jagodzinski. The move is expected to be announced at a 3:00 p.m.
This whole “screw the BcS” thing could be catching on.We previously mentioned that Utah coach Kyle Whittingham plans to vote for the Vandalay Sugar Bowl champion Utes as the top team in the USA Today poll.
We mentioned it the other day at PFT, and we probably should mention it, you know, here.On Thursday night, we’ll be doing a Live Blog of the BcS National Championship game. All four-and-a-half hours of it.During the Live Blog, we’ll also unveil the new editor of CFT.What the hell else do you expect us to do?
During an appearance last week on The Dan Patrick Show (yes, I’m as big of a name-dropping douche at CFT as I am at my primary online residence), I pointed out that, regardless of Commissioner Roger Goodell’s effort to stop the flow of underclassmen into the 2009 NFL draft by pointing out that the rookie pay structure won’t change in 2010, guys will still come out in droves this year. Why?
Though we don’t pretend to know what will happen with one of the most bizarre stories we can recall coming from the world of college football, one of our NFL sources with knowledge of the situation at Boston College confirms that coach Jeff Jagodzinski is meeting with A.D.
Dan Patrick, who has been as plugged in as anyone regarding the bizarre developments at Boston College, reports that coach Jeff Jagodzinski currently is meeting with Athletic Director Gene DeFilippo regarding Jagodzinski’s interview for the Jets head-coaching job.Per Patrick, DeFilippo got his DeFruit of the Looms in a bunch because he learned of Jagodzinski’s interview with the Jets from a reporter.Supposedly, if Jagodzinski had merely sought permission to interview for the job, DeFilippo would have been placated. It remains to be seen whether this can be worked out.
The folks from Utah are pretty damn relentless. And we like it.The Attorney General in the state that houses the 2008 CFT National Champions thinks that the BcS might violate antitrust laws.A.G.
The controversy regarding the apparent ineligibility of the undefeated Utah Utes, who rolled the Crimson Tide at the Vandalay Sugar Bowl, for consideration for the BcS National Championship.Per USA Today, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham says that he’ll vote for his own squad as the No. 1 team in the final USA Today Coaches’ Poll. The only glitch?
Dan Patrick, who might or might not be transmogrifying into a college football reporter, reports that Boston College coach Jeff Jagodzinski is out, based on his decision to interview for the current head-coaching vacancy with the New York Jets.On Sunday night, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that Jagodzinski had been threatened with termination if he went through with the interview.Patrick, citing an unnamed source, had said that Jagodzinski would interview for the Jets job on Monday night and Tuesday, despite the threat of termination. The next question becomes whether Jagodzinksi is entitled to the balance of his contract at Boston College.
The New York Jets of the National Football League are looking for a new coach.
Oh, you beautiful, idiotic Oklahoma Sooners.Haven’t you seen what a motivated Tim Tebow can do?
Sure, the BcS National Championship game is still five days away. But we don’t need to wait that long.College football has a national champion.
Ohio State tailback Beanie Wells, a junior, can leave the Buckeyes and enter the NFL draft, if he so chooses. For now, he’s not tipping his hand as to his plans.”
We heard rumors during the season that South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is planning to retire.Spurrier denied the rumors at the time, and when the regular season ended there were no developments. But, then again, the Gamecocks were preparing for the Vandalay Outback Bowl. Now that the bowl game is over, could Spurrier walk away?
Penn State coach Joe Paterno opted not to make a pre-game appearance on the field prior to Thursday’s Rose Bowl presented by Vandalay Industries, which could end up costing Penn State a small slice of their take-home pay for participating in the game.Early in the ABC broadcast of Penn State’s eventual 38-24 loss to USC, it was reported that Penn State could be fined up to $10,000 because Paterno did not make himself available to the media covering the game.Paterno coached the game from the press box, and he stayed there at halftime, opting not to make the trek down to the locker room. The 82-year-old coach had hip replacement surgery in the days after the team’s regular-season finale.
As previously mentioned, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz didn’t say whether he would respond to possible overtures from NFL teams that currently are considering the possibility of hiring Pats V.P. of player personnel Scott Pioli. But while Ferentz might stay, his star running back is leaving.Shonn Greene, who rushed for more than 100 yards in every game this season, said in a post-game interview that he’ll enter the NFL draft.Specifically, Greene said that he has “nothing left to prove” at Iowa.Greene rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns in Thursday’s 31-10 win over South Carolina.
[Editor’s note: With our good friend MDS making a Schrute-style departure to Staples, I’ll be taking over CFT for the immediate future.
Earlier this month, the NFL experimented with 3ality Digital’s groundbreaking 3D technology for broadcasting sporting events, with the Raiders-Chargers game beamed to theaters in San Diego, Los Angeles, New York, and Foxborough.Apparently, the experiment was a success.3ality now plans to take the project to the next level, with a live broadcast of the BCS national championship game between Florida and Oklahoma. In an agreement reached among FOX, Sony, and Cinedigm, the January 8 title game will be available in 80 theaters, covering 35 states.”
One of our NFL sources has shared with us an intriguing take on the potential import of the decision of Tennessee to hire Lane Kiffin to succeed Phil Fulmer. It was widely believed that Cincinnati’s Brian Kelly would get the Tennessee job.
We’re hearing increasing chatter from our NFL sources that South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier will retire after the 2008 season.Spurrier, 63, was thought to be leaning heavily toward retirement before Saturday’s 56-6 debacle against Florida.
Aren’t they supposed to be really bright at Stanford?
