Sure, the BcS National Championship game is still five days away.But we don’t need to wait that long.College football has a national champion. And it is the Utes.What is a Ute, you ask? A Ute is a member of the best damn team in college football.Who didn’t think that Alabama would blow Utah off the Superdome field? Instead, Utah did the blowing to ‘Bama, winning by 14 points in a game that didn’t seem nearly that close.So Utah has won all 13 of its games, and it handled the Crimson Tide in the Vandalay Sugar Bowl.We don’t care what happens on January 8. There is one undefeated team. And that team deserves to be the champion of college football.On the bright side, maybe the ultimate outcome to the 2008 season will result in even more momentum toward a real playoff system.With MDS leaving and yours truly running the show on an interim basis, I’ve been asking myself why it is that I don’t have the same passion for college football that I have for the NFL.The answer is that, in the NFL, they decide things on the field. Though the college game is trying to create the illusion of fairness and structure and the determination of champions via on-field exploits, the reality is that, without a playoff, there will be no way to create a genuine sense of equity.
