No player has ever won the FedEx Cup three times. Rory McIlroy is looking to change that over the next three weeks, and he has plenty of bettor support in the first leg of his journey.

McIlroy won the season-long title in a memorable playoff back in 2016, then joined Tiger Woods as the only two-time winner in 2019 during the first year of the “starting strokes” format. That latter title started with a trip to Liberty National for The Northern Trust, and this week the New Jersey venue once again hosts the playoff opener.

McIlroy has some work to do, as his results have been somewhat tempered since a win at Quail Hollow in May. He’s starting the postseason at No. 26 in points, but oddsmakers at PointsBet Sportsbook have taken plenty of action on him to win this week at +2200 odds. McIlroy is the most-bet player this week in terms of handle, accounting for nearly 10 percent of all of the money wagered in the pre-tournament market:

Most popular Northern Trust bets by handle (via PointsBet)

1. Rory McIlroy (+2200, 9.3% of money wagered)

2. Jon Rahm (+1000, 7.6%)

3. Dustin Johnson (+1800, 7.0%)

4. Daniel Berger (+3000, 7.0%)

5. Jordan Spieth (+1600, 4.5%)

When the action is broken down by total wagers, it’s not McIlroy atop the standings. Instead that spot goes to Berger, who has three top-10 finishes in his last four starts and won earlier this year at Pebble Beach. Open champ Collin Morikawa is second in terms of tickets, while Rahm, Spieth and McIlroy all factor in the top 5 of both lists:

Most popular Northern Trust bets by tickets (via PointsBet)

1. Daniel Berger (+3000, 5.4% of tickets)

2. Collin Morikawa (+1600, 4.8%)

3. Jon Rahm (+1000, 4.6%)

4. Rory McIlroy (+2200, 4.4%)

5. Jordan Spieth (+1600, 4.4%)

Notably absent from the top 10 in both tickets and handle: Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele, who finished T-46 in Memphis in his first start since Tokyo.

There’s also a market for who will win the entire FedEx Cup three weeks from now at East Lake. While Morikawa and Spieth enter the playoffs at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in the points race, the betting favorite to win the season-long hardware is currently world No. 1 Jon Rahm:
