They have been linked and compared constantly since they were drafted back-to-back in 2020. Tonight, Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert will take the field against each other as the Miami Dolphins (8-4) and Los Angeles Chargers (6-6) meet at SoFi Stadium in Southern California on FNIA on NBC.
Tagovailoa may be the most polarizing figure in the NFL. The experts consistently speak to his deficiencies under center while the public defends him speaking to his history as a winning quarterback. Many of those experts speak to a lack of accuracy and arm strength. Well, credit Tyreek Hill and co. if you prefer, but Tua is averaging a league-leading 9yds/attempt and is Top 5 in the league completing 68.1% of his passes. Tagovailoa has led Miami to the brink of what would be their first playoff game since 2016 and just their second since 2009. BetMGM lists his odds to claim NFL MVP Honors at 12:1 (5th on the board).
In LA, the head-scratching continues. How have the Chargers not figured things out? After some offseason maneuvers to bolster the defense, this was to be a breakout year for Herbert and the Chargers even in a division that was to be the most competitive the NFL had seen maybe ever. While Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have met expectations, the rest of the AFC West has been closer to a dumpster fire than the expected beacon of light. The Chargers have fallen somewhere in between the extremes and have been average at best...and a disappointment.
If you are basing great seasons on individual stats, you would argue Herbert has held up his end of the bargain as he is the co-favorite (along with Tua) to lead the NFL in passing yardage this season (+700). The case for Herbert further improves when you couple his more than 3300 yards passing with 20 TDs and seven INTs.
As mentioned, tonight these two go head-to-head in Southern California. No shock but there are massive playoff implications involved as well with the Dolphins (+400 to win the division) one game behind the Buffalo Bills (-500) in the AFC East and the Chargers (+140 to make the playoffs) tied with the New England Patriots (+275) one game behind the New York Jets (+100) for the final playoff spot in the AFC.
Miami Dolphins (-175) @ Los Angeles Chargers (+145)
Line: Dolphins -3.5 (-105)
Over / Under: 54.5

Matthew Berry sorts through the challenges each team faces as they take the field on Sunday night. His research finds areas bettors can attack. Last week, he noted three plays and each ticket cashed (2nd straight week cashing each ticket). Here are his plays for Sunday Night Football on NBC. Feel free to play them individually or get a Boost from BetMGM if you parlay them.
Tua Tagovailoa 250+ Passing Yards
Since returning from a two-game stint on the sidelines in concussion protocol, Tua has exceeded this number in six straight games. The Chargers’ pass defense ranks 17th in terms of yards allowed. If Kahlil Mack and co. fail to put pressure on Tua, expect a big day for the Dolphins’ passing attack.
Justin Herbert 250+ Passing Yards
Herbert has exceeded 250 yards passing in each of LA’s last three games and eight of twelve games this season. With the Over-Under set at 54.5, BetMGM is expecting plenty of scoring which correlates directly to plenty of passing.
Tyreek Hill 75+ Receiving Yards
Bet MGM currently lists Hill as the favorite (+600) to lead the NFL in receiving yards. The former Chief is having a monster season. He currently leads the league in receptions (96) and yards (1379). Surprisingly, Hill has only eclipsed 75 yards in eight of twelve games this season. That said, expect Hill on the national stage to look to cement his status as the favorite (+190) to earn AP Offensive Player of the Year Honors.
If you want to ride with Matthew Berry, know that BetMGM is sweating it with you. Play them individually or parlay the three. BetMGM will be boosting the parlay from +125 to +150.
Have a great weekend.
