Lions fired special teams coordinator Brayden Coombs.
Coombs, who had spent a decade with the Bengals before being hired by the Lions in January 2020, couldn’t make it through one season in Detroit. It’s a surprise seeing that the Bengals had the best special teams DVOA under Coombs in 2019. The Lions have the league’s second highest net punting average and one of the lowest kick return averages allowed this season. The Detroit News’ Justin Rogers said the firing went beyond on-field results. Rogers posted on Twitter that the “feeling within the organization is Coombs was more about himself than the team.”
