Ball State starting QB undergoes knee surgery, should be ready for opener

Ball State will prepare to open the 2013 season against FCS opponent Illinois State without its starting quarterback, Keith Wenning. For the time being, at least.

Cardinals coach Pete Lembo said in a release Saturday that Wenning underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and will be out for an unspecified amount of time. However, Lembo indicated the surgery was minor and Wenning will be back and ready for the season opener.

“We fully expect he will be back on the practice field in a relatively short time and ready to go for the season opener Aug. 29,” Lembo said in the release. “In the meantime, we will be able to get a very thorough evaluation of our backup quarterbacks who are competing well so far this preseason.”

Wenning was a second-team All-MAC selection last year, throwing for nearly 3,100 yards and 24 touchdowns.
