CHARLIE’S REVENGE

From the Big Lead via Deadspin comes an intriguing epilogue to that drunken, baudy, and generally unfunny roast of ESPN’s Man-Girl & Meatball. To refresh your memory, Dana Jacobson got all liquored up and said some things that would make Baby Jesus cry. (And Grown-Up Jesus, too.) She got in trouble for it.Per TBL, both Jacobson and Trey Wingo sent written apologies to Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis. Wingo’s apology apparently arose from the fact that he used the word “retarded” during the roast, and Weis has a daughter with “special needs” (other than “food because daddy keeps eating it all”).Weis accepted Wingo’s apology with a letter signed by all of Charlie’s family. Jacobson reportedly received a terse letter dressing her down about professionalism.Though we sounded off about the situation at PFT back when it occurred, the passage of time has prompted us to conclude that Jacobson’s biggest offense (apart from, you know, putting her immortal soul at risk) was being unfunny -- and that if ESPN didn’t want to provoke attempts at baudy or off-color humor, ESPN never should have conducted an untelevised roast. So if Weis is pissed at anyone, he should be pissed at ESPN for providing the format, the microphone, and the booze.
