As usual, there’s been plenty of offseason tomfoolery involving college football players from around the country. One incident involving a current and former Ole Miss player, however, has been kept under wraps. Until now.
The Memphis Commercial-Appeal reports that backup quarterback Barry Brunetti and former Rebels quarterback Randall Mackey were cited in May on misdemeanor charges (story is behind subscription wall). According to the report, officers entered an apartment building which contained a strong odor of marijuana. Police found a marijuana grinder in Brunetti’s room and the QB was arrested on a charge of misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
Mackey, who graduated last December, was charged with misdemeanor simple assault after allegedly shoving a police officer. The incident reportedly came after a car accident, though the exact details of what transpired aren’t clear. The car connected to the accident apparently belonged to 2013 Rebels recruit Nick Brassell, who likely won’t be joining the team this year because of academic issues.
“We addressed this incident internally,” coach Hugh Freeze said in a statement.
Brunetti enters 2013 as the team’s backup quarterback behind Bo Wallace.
