Ex-USC QB Max Wittek benched as Hawaii’s starter

Not only will Hawaii have a new head coach this weekend, the Rainbows will have a new starter under center as well.

In one of the first major moves of his “administration,” interim UH head coach Chris Naeole has revealed that Ikaika Woolsey will start at quarterback this Saturday against UNLV. Woolsey will replace Max Wittek, who had started eight of the first nine games for the 2-7 Rainbow Warriors.

I don’t have the option of worrying about feelings. I’m going to do what I feel is right and best for the team,” Naeole said, adding, “I told Ikaika I’m not afraid to pull the trigger and put Max in.”

Wittek, a USC transfer, was completing less than 50 percent of his passes on the season and had thrown 13 interceptions against just seven touchdowns in 242 attempts.

Woolsey started the only game Wittek didn’t, a 28-27 loss at New Mexico. In UH’s other six losses, the Rainbow Warriors lost by an average of 37 points per game. UH scored seven points or less in four of Wittek’s starts, and were shutout in three of them.

The last loss, 58-7 to Air Force, was followed by Norm Chow‘s dismissal this past Sunday.
