Irish reel in another recruit

Word is flying around the internet that Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis received another commitment, this time from cornerback Toney Hurd Jr. Hurd is from Missouri City, Texas and depending on what recruiting service you believe, he’s either very highly touted, or highly touted.

Hurd stands anywhere from 5-8 to 5-10 depending on what you’re reading, and he looks like he’s got legit speed and has a very good offer list, choosing the Irish over Cal, Auburn, Florida State, Tennessee, and many others. It’s also nice to see that he might have some ball skills, as Hurd registered five interceptions during his junior season and already has four this year.

Notre Dame still has an offer out to Lamarcus Joyner of St. Thomas Aquinas, but the Irish have to be happy reeling in three corners in this recruiting class, joining Lo Wood and Spencer Boyd. Remember when the Irish couldn’t get a cornerback to commit for the life of them?

Hurd took his official visit during the Michigan State game. ESPN’s recruiting service gives him this evaluation:

Hurd is a defensive playmaker and one of the better ball-hawking defensive backs in this class. Has marginal height, which is a concern when matched up versus taller college receivers, but is well-defined, strong and a fierce competitor to help mask his smaller measurables. Possesses great instincts and quick-twitch, reactive athleticism. Reads the play quickly and takes sharp, direct angles to the ball against the run or pass.

When Hurd caught up with Irish Sports Daily, he was all smiles.

“Before I went up there, I talked to my mother and mentioned Notre Dame to her, and she was instantly ecstatic. I felt Notre Dame had a great combination of both football and academics. That’s what swayed me towards Notre Dame.”
