Papajohns.com Bowl, SEC reach agreement

A newly-reached agreement will keep the Papajohns.com bowl associated with the SEC for the next four years, the Birmingham News is reporting.

After previously working under a two-year deal, the postseason game formerly known as the Birmingham Bowl is now under contract with the conference through the 2013 season.

“We certainly sense more and more community involvement with the bowl, which in our view is essential to the success of a bowl,” SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said. “We’re very pleased that we’re able to enter into a more formal and longer agreement with the bowl and to hopefully make a contribution to the community in which the conference office is located.”

If two SEC teams receive BcS bids -- as has been the case the past four years -- the Papajohns.com Bowl would rotate with the Liberty Bowl on the ninth and tenth picks from the conference, although Slive stated that the two bowls would be permitted to come to a mutual agreement on the slotting of two bowl-eligible SEC teams.

The Big East sends it’s No. 4 team to the Papajohns.com bowl as part of its bowl arrangement.

In last year’s edition, UConn downed South Carolina 21-7 at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala. The Big East has won all four games played since Papajohns.com became the title sponsor.
