Pelini: ‘As hard a loss as I’ve ever encountered’

As gut-wrenching as Nebraska’s last-minute loss to Virginia Tech was to fans of the program, they can at least take some solace in the fact that the loss hit their head coach like no other in his playing and coaching career.

Speaking to the media today, Bo Pelini said the ending of the game -- Virginia Tech scored the winning touchdown with 21 seconds left -- “took me a little longer” to get over than a defeat would normally take, but added he has -- finally -- moved on. Still...

“I can say that’s as hard a loss as I’ve ever encountered in football, and I’ve had some hard ones. But I’ve moved on. It took me a little longer, but I moved on,” Pelini said.

Pelini also vowed there would be no hangover from the loss in their upcoming game. (Of course, the fact that the upcoming game is at home against Louisiana-Lafayette might have something to do with the sincerity and ferocity of the promise.)

“You’re going to see a bunch of guys playing with passion,” Pelini said. “You’re not going to see anybody crying about what happened last week. You’re going to see guys coming out and playing our tails off. That’s what’s going to happen. I vow that will happen on Saturday.”
