The report that Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford has spent his team’s off day traveling to Alabama for a visit with world-renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews has triggered two possible theories, as John Taylor previously has pointed out.
First, Bradford could be simply seeking clearance from Andrews to return from a separated shoulder suffered on September 5.
Second, Bradford could be seeking advice from Andrews regarding the ongoing treatment of the injured joint.
Though Joe Schad of ESPN.com, citing an unnamed source, reports that Bradford is merely seeking clearance to play, a source tells us that this is Bradford’s second visit to Andrews -- and that the first visit came roughly two weeks ago.
Per the source, Andrews told Bradford that the shoulder would be re-evaluated in two weeks, and that surgery was not ruled out at that time.
So while it’s entirely possible that Bradford is hoping for clearance to play next week, it’s also possible that Dr. Andrews will tell Bradford that the damage isn’t properly healing on its own, and that the use of a scalpel might be needed to help the process along.
