WOLFPACK QUARTERBACK BATTLE SHRINKS TO THREE

The good news? The field of potential starting quarterbacks for N.C. State has been cut by 40 percent. The bad news? There are still three candidates for the job.Senior Daniel Evans, redshirt freshman Russell Wilson, and freshman Mike Glennon are the remaining candidates.Coach Tom O’Brien hopes to pick a winner by Wednesday’s intrasquad scrimmage. For now, O’Brien sounds like coach Lovie Smith of the NFL’s Chicago Bears. “Flip a coin,” O’Brien said. “You’ll need three coins.” (Actually, you just need one coin. With three sides.)Harrison Beck, a transfer from Nebraska, and Justin Burke, a sophomore, have fallen out of contention.Complicating matters is that the top returning receiver, Donald Bowens, will now miss the season with a hairline fracture in his back.
