Mariners signed OF Eric Young Jr. to a minor league contract.
Young had a terrific .323/.462/.452 batting line in 39 plate appearances this spring in the Grapefruit League but still got cut loose by the rebuilding Orioles last week. Now he joins a different rebuilding club and will hope for a better shot. The 33-year-old outfielder is ticketed for Triple-A Tacoma to open the regular season.

Orioles released OF Eric Young Jr.
Young hit .323/.462/.452 this spring, but the O’s are going to go with youth in their outfield.

Orioles signed OF Eric Young Jr. to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Young appeared in 41 games with the Angels last season while batting just .202/.248/.303 over 107 plate appearances. Still, the 33-year-old brings some speed and can play all over the outfield if needed, so it’s plausible he’ll carve out a role with the rebuilding O’s.

Andrelton Simmons is also on the bench. The Halos will go with Eric Young Jr. in left field and Kaleb Cowart at shortstop.

Eric Young Jr. (bereavement list) won’t rejoin the Rockies until Friday.
He’ll take the full bereavement while tending to his grandfather, who suffered a serious stroke, in Mississippi. Tyler Colvin figures to see more playing time while Young is away from the team.

Eric Young Jr. (bereavement list) won’t rejoin the Rockies until next Wednesday.
His time on the bereavement list expires Saturday, but the funeral services for his late grandfather will be held that day. Young will go to the team’s spring training complex for a few days for conditioning before rejoining the team.

Rockies placed OF Eric Young Jr. on the bereavement list.
It sounds like he’s dealing with a family issue. Young cannot miss more than seven games while on the list. Tyler Colvin stands to benefit in his absence.

Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Rockies “remain strongly interested” in a trade for Mets’ infielder Justin Turner.
The Rockies’ efforts to acquire Marco Sctuaro from the Red Sox hit a snag, but Renck calls Turner a “more attainable target” to play second base. We wouldn’t argue with that. Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reported last month that the Rockies and Mets were talking about a deal that would send Turner to Colorado in exchange for Eric Young, Jr. The 27-year-old infielder batted .260/.334/.356 with four homers, 51 RBI and a .690 OPS over 487 plate appearances with New York last season. As of now, Jonathan Herrera, Chris Nelson and D.J. LeMahieu figure to compete for the Rockies’ starting second base job during spring training.

Eric Young, Jr. released a statement Monday calling reports that he was dismissed from his Venezuelan Winter League team due to tardiness “incomplete and erroneous.”
Young said that a problem with travel arrangements for a family member led to him arriving late to a game on Thanksgiving Day. While various media reports suggested that he was late twice, he made it a point to clarify that it was his lone attendance issue. Young was also unhappy that the team failed to address his safety and security concerns for his family member. The 26-year-old batted just .240/.333/.240 over 50 at-bats before being dismissed by Bravos de Margarita.
