Ryan Johnson gave up five runs over five innings Thursday in a loss to the Angels.

All five runs came in the first. After a clean single to start the inning, novice outfielder Christian Moore botched Nick Kurtz’s fly to left for a double and back-to-back homers followed. Johnson finally escaped the frame after 35 pitches and then never gave up any extra-base hits or walks afterwards. His career ERA actually dropped from 10.17 to 9.96 with the performance. He’ll probably be sent down for a fresh arm Friday, but we’ll see.

Johnson was outstanding on Tuesday in what was his best start in the majors so far, holding the Orioles scoreless over six innings on his way to a win. He allowed just one hit and one walk while generating 15 whiffs to strike out eight batters. The 23-year-old right-hander will look to build on his excellent outing with a start against the Mariners in Seattle on Monday.

The 23-year-old right-hander will rejoin the Angels to start against the Athletics on Thursday evening in West Sacramento. Johnson holds a 15.12 ERA, 2.64 WHIP and a 5/7 K/BB ratio over 8 1/3 innings with the Halos this season. He does not make for an attractive streaming option on Thursday evening and should be avoided at all costs.

Johnson returns to the minors after allowing eight runs over five innings across three relief appearances since returning from the injured list on May 15. The 23-year-old still has a chance to eventually emerge as a back-end rotation arm for the Angels but the results haven’t been there in the majors over the last two years.

Johnson was put on the injured list back on April 6th with a viral infection, but then was pulled from his rehab start the next week with a hamstring strain. He restarted his rehab assignment at the beginning of the month and will now return to a spot on the Angels’ active roster, with Drew Pomeranz headed to the IL. Johnson will be an option for the final spot in the rotation that’s currently being held by Alek Manoah, who has been pitching in bulk relief.

Johnson was pulled off his rehab assignment two weeks ago because of a hamstring issue, but the right-hander has recovered and faced live hitting in Arizona. The 23-year-old will likely need a few rehab appearances before being ready to join the Angels’ pitching staff.

Angels manager Kurt Suzuki told reporters Johnson will undergo further evaluation and testing after feeling a tweak in his hamstring. The 23-year-old threw just two pitches prior to departing the contest. Johnson has been on the shelf since early April recovering from a viral infection.

Johnson winds up requiring a trip to the injured list after being scratched from Sunday’s start against the Mariners due to illness. The 23-year-old’s absence seems to pave the way for pitching prospect George Klassen to get some run in the rotation for at least another turn or two.
  • LAA Starting Pitcher #32
There had been speculation when George Klassen was announced as the starter on Sunday that Johnson was simply getting booted from the rotation after being shelled in his first start, but it sounds like he’s just a bit under the weather. No word yet on when he’ll take his next turn in the Halos’ rotation.

Left-hander Joey Lucchesi was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. Klassen will be thrown right into the fire for the Angels, starting on Sunday against the Mariners. It’s unclear if Ryan Johnson is being bumped from the rotation entirely after his poor season debut, or simply getting pushed back. Klassen, 24, posted a 6.43 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and a 14/9 K/BB ratio over 14 innings during five appearances in Cactus League play.

Johnson wasn’t particularly sharp in his season debut, walking four batters and only notching a pair of strikeouts. However, he didn’t get any help from his fielders on several occasions, most notably with two outs in the opening frame when a pop up to shallow center field inexplicably got over the head of second baseman Oswald Peraza, allowing a pair of runs to score on the play. Yoán Moncada committed a mental mistake in the third inning that led directly to another two runs crossing the plate. Neither play technically goes down as an error, but they certainly didn’t help matters. He’ll aim for better results against the Mariners at home on Sunday to finish off a two-start week.

Jacob Wilson (shoulder) is not in the starting lineup for Thursday’s game against the Giants.

Wilson left Wednesday’s game against San Francisco while dealing with an issue in his left shoulder, and the 24-year-old will be out of action for at least one game while recovering. Recently-promoted Alika Williams will handle shortstop duties while Wilson recovers.

Athletics recalled INF Alika Williams from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Williams was just optioned back to Triple-A by the A’s on Sunday, but the injury to Zack Gelof (hand) makes it possible for him to rejoin the roster earlier than the normal requirement of 15 games. He’ll likely operate as a backup to Jacob Wilson and Max Muncy now that he’s back with the big-league club.

Athletics placed INF Zack Gelof on the 10-day injured list.

Gelof suffered a hand laceration and contusion during Tuesday’s game against the Giants, and the 26-year-old will now miss at least a week with the ailment. If there are no setbacks, it seems feasible that Gelof will be back in the early portion of July.

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports that the Diamondbacks will activate Max Kepler before Thursday’s game against the Cardinals.

Kepler will have a chance to make his debut for the Diamondbacks after being suspended for the first 80 games of the campaign for violating MLB’s drug policy. The 33-year-old will likely get time in the corner outfield against right-hand pitching, but it’d be fair to say that a wait-and-see approach is appropriate in terms of a potential add to a fantasy roster. Tim Tawa will be optioned to Reno to make room for Kepler.

Rays signed OF Jake Cave to a minor league contract.

Cave hasn’t played in the majors since 2024, and has spent the last two years playing in Korea and Mexico, respectfully. He’s hit .232/.292/.400 over his 523 games in his career, and he could be an option for the Rays before the end of the 2026 campaign.

Cubs designated RHP Yosver Zulueta for assignment.

It clears room on the 40-man roster for David Peterson. Zulueta was acquired from the Mariners for cash considerations a little over a week ago, and he could be changing organizations again. If he goes unclaimed, Zulueta likely reports back to Triple-A Iowa.

Mets acquired INF Cole Mathis from the Cubs in exchange for LHP David Peterson.

Mathis, 22, was a 2024 second-round pick who has performed well in 2026 with a .981 OPS and 10 homers over 39 games. It is worth noting that he turns 23 at the end of July but hasn’t played above High-A, but he does have the chance to hit for average and power at the highest level. He also is likely limited to first base, so he’s going to have to come close to maxing out offensively to have fantasy value.

Cubs acquired LHP David Peterson from the Mets in exchange for INF Cole Mathis.

Peterson joins a beleaguered Cubs’ rotation to provide some stabilization, but it’s worth noting that he’s been far from a reliable option for most of 2026 with a 6.09 ERA and 1.65 WHIP over his 68 innings with New York prior to the move. The left-hander has had success in the past prior to this year’s scuffles, and because of the litany of injuries to the Chicago staff, he’s going to be given some runway. He should make his debut for the Cubs in the coming days.

Will Sammon of The Athletic reports that the Mets will recall Zach Thornton to pitch Friday against the Phillies.

Thornton will get another chance as the Mets need a new rotation option with David Peterson traded to the Cubs. The 24-year-old allowed four runs in 4 1/3 innings in his MLB debut against the Nationals in May. Thornton is worth monitoring, but fantasy managers shouldn’t rush to the waiver wire to procure his services.

Ricky Tiedemann (elbow) didn’t make his season debut with Single-A Dunedin on Tuesday due to neck soreness.

Tiedemann allowed one run over one inning on June 16th in a minor league rehab appearance in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League and was set to make his affiliate debut on Tuesday. As of now, there is no set plan for when he will pitch next. The 23-year-old missed all of the 2025 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery and then felt renewed elbow soreness during spring training. He can’t quite seem to shake the injury bug.
