Will Warren strikes out eight in loss to Reds

Warren struck out seven and didn’t walk anyone, helping him keep his WHIP under 1 on the day. He was in line for the loss before the Yankees rallied to tie the game at 2 in the ninth, but they went on to lose in 11, dropping their seventh in a row. Warren’s ERA and K-BB% each trended in the wrong direction from April to May to June, but he began July with a promising outing that manager Aaron Boone capped at 79 pitches. He’ll next line up for a pivotal divisional matchup versus the Rays.

This was a rough day at the park for Warren. The Red Sox jumped on him quickly for four runs over the first three innings and it easily could have been more given the quality of contact they were making. When it was all said and done, Warren allowed 10 hard-hit balls and half of those turned into outs. Also, the Red Sox hit four balls at least 400 feet, but only one was a home run due to Fenway Park’s wonky dimensions. Nevertheless, this was the first time all season where Warren failed to strike a batter out and he rarely even got into two-strike counts as the Red Sox swung early and often. It’s worth noting that he has a 4.44 ERA since the beginning of May after an excellent start to the season. He’s scheduled to face the Tigers at home next time out.

Warren only struck out one as the Blue Jays relentlessly put runners on base. The right-hander had been enjoying the best season of his career thus far, but he simply didn’t have the feel for his arsenal on Sunday. Warren hasn’t altered his pitch mix from a season ago, but he’s thrown a bit harder so far in 2026. He’ll host the Reds at Yankee Stadium in his next scheduled start.

All of the runs came in the third, which featured a walk, a double, two singles and then a Brayan Rocchio throwing error. Warren got pulled with a 4-3 lead in the fifth after a HBP, a strikeout and then an odd catcher’s interference on a one-two pitch to José Ramírez. The curve from Warren came close to Ramírez’s back foot and catcher J.C. Escarra gloved both ball and shoe while making the catch. It was ruled catcher’s interference on replay, though Ramírez wasn’t swinging and wasn’t affected by it at all. Warren was lifted immediately afterwards, and Brent Headrick finished the inning without incident. Warren ended up with five strikeouts, and he allowed two earned runs or fewer for the 11th time in 13 starts this season. He’ll take a 3.28 ERA into his next start, which will probably come Sunday against the Blue Jays.

But not before the Yankees got people in the gates and sold some food. Ranger Suárez and Will Warren were scheduled to start tonight’s game. Suarez will go tomorrow, with Connelly Early following on Monday, but the Yankees have decided to push Warren back to Monday against Cleveland and keep Cam Schlittler in line to face the Red Sox on four days’ rest.

Warren walked three and gave up a sac fly in the second and later allowed a solo shot from Salvador Perez in the sixth. It wasn’t one of his best performances, but those walks in the second were his only ones of the day, at least. He struck out three. Warren will have a more difficult assignment Sunday against the A’s in Sacramento, and mixed leaguers in daily leagues might have some better options.

In spite of his 6-1 record and 3.61 ERA, Warren might have spent some time in the Yankees pen with Gerrit Cole back if Max Fried hadn’t gotten hurt last week. Fortunately, his spot is secure again now. He’s currently 10th among qualified starters with his 4.77 K:BB. He’ll make his next start Sunday against the Rays,

The Yankees are shuffling the rotation after Max Fried (elbow) was placed on the injured list. Elmer Rodriguez was previously announced to start Sunday’s contest, and Ryan Weathers — who originally was slated to pitch in the game — now will start Tuesday’s game against Toronto. Warren has been solid in 2026 with a 5-1 record and 3.42 ERA.

This is an unfortunate way for the Yankees to solve their rotation crunch, but assuming that Fried is going to spend some on the IL, it allows them to stick with a five-man group and still keep Will Warren and Ryan Weathers after Gerrit Cole is activated. Fried’s last big elbow scare came in 2023, when he missed about half of the season with a forearm strain. He also had a brief absence in 2024 with neuritis in the area.

Warren gave up four hits, walked one and struck out six. He improved to 5-1 with the win. Warren bounced back after he was hit hard for six runs against the Rangers last week. The 26-year-old right-hander now has a 3.42 ERA on the season. With the Yankees off on Thursday, Warren is lined up to pitch against the Blue Jays on Monday, giving him a two-start week next week.
