Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters Will Smith (neck) could return in early July.

Roberts expressed optimism that Smith will be ready to return when the Dodgers return from a 10-game road trip on July 2. There’s a ton of time for things to change, but it seems like Smith is going to need at least a handful of rehab games to get back up to speed and the Dodgers have zero incentive to rush him back. He’s been out since mid-June recovering from neck inflammation.

Blaze Alexander will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Durham on Tuesday.

Alexander, out since mid-July with a fractured hand, figures to rejoin the Orioles next weekend. He was playing regularly between second and third when he got hurt, but he might be in line for more outfield time now with Coby Mayo and Christian Encarnacion-Strand having stepped up.

Kyle Schwarber connected for a walk-off two-run homer off Riley O’Brien in the bottom of the ninth to propel the Phillies to a 6-4 win, their ninth straight.

Kyle Schwarber connected for a walk-off two-run homer off Riley O’Brien in the bottom of the ninth to propel the Phillies to a 6-4 win, their ninth straight. It was his only hit of the afternoon. Philadelphia trailed 4-0 and was down to their final out before a barrage of hits tied the game. The Cardinals left O’Brien in, and on his 39th pitch of the inning, Schwarber walked it off. The 33-year-old is having another monstrous year with a league-leading 39 homers despite an elevated strikeout rate. By wRC+, it’s the third-best season of his career. Schwarber also started at first base on Sunday, his fourth time doing so this season.

Cristopher Sánchez received a no-decision on Sunday against the Cardinals, allowing four earned runs on nine hits over 6 2/3 innings pitched.

Sánchez struck out seven and didn’t walk anyone. He was in line for the loss before the Phillies scored six runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to walk it off. It was a letdown performance by his standards, but he’s had a phenomenal season with a 2.62 ERA. The broadcast noted he has over 100 strikeouts with his changeup, and no other pitcher has more than 55. He’ll look to rebound in a favorable matchup against the Angels next time out.

According to The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya, the Dodgers are considering having Shohei Ohtani return to pitching by throwing an inning next Sunday against the Tigers.

Nothing will be finalized until after Ohtani’s next bullpen session, but the Dodgers feel like he’s close. Ohtani threw 30 pitches in live batting practice Saturday. He hasn’t pitched in a game since July 3 because of knee and biceps issues.
  • Kyle Leahy

Kyle Leahy struck out four while allowing two hits and two walks across four scoreless innings on Sunday against the Phillies.

Leahy and four Cardinals relievers had the team in line for a victory before closer Riley O’Brien imploded, allowing six runs in the ninth. The notable takeaway is that Leahy was pulled at 63 pitches, and St. Louis has made it clear his workload will be managed down the stretch. He’s up to 126 1/3 innings this season after throwing 88 in 2025, the vast majority out of the bullpen. St. Louis’ rotation recently suffered injuries to Hunter Dobbins and Andre Pallante, so it remains to be seen how the Cardinals handle Leahy going forward. His next start lines up at home against the Pirates.

Riley O’Brien took the loss on Sunday in Philadelphia, allowing six earned runs on five hits and a walk.

All six runs scored with two outs. O’Brien loaded the bases before allowing a three-run double to Edmundo Sosa, and Bryan De La Cruz followed with a game-tying hit. That set the stage for Kyle Schwarber’s walk-off homer on O’Brien’s 39th pitch of the inning. The Cardinals’ closer hadn’t allowed a run this month until Sunday’s meltdown.

Alec Burleson went 2-for-4 with two RBI as the Cardinals fell to the Phillies 6-4 on Sunday.

Burleson got the scoring started in the first by driving in JJ Wetherholt, then brought Jordan Walker home with an RBI single in the fourth. He’s up to 96 RBI this season, one behind Sal Stewart for the MLB lead. Walker is also at 96, as the two teammates have been among baseball’s best at driving in runs this year.

JJ Wetherholt went 2-for-5 with a stolen base, an RBI, and a run scored as the Cardinals fell to the Phillies 6-4 on Sunday.

Wetherholt is up to 14 steals this season to go along with 17 homers. He also has 87 runs compared to just 48 RBI. That makes sense for a leadoff hitter, but these counting-stat differences can go unnoticed in fantasy. While his rookie season has been a success thanks to on-base ability and defense at second base, his fantasy campaign has been defined by hitting leadoff for the Cardinals all year. Alec Burleson and Jordan Walker are tied for second in MLB with 96 RBI each, boosting Wetherholt’s runs. He’ll need to work on his slugging output to make a sophomore jump in 2027.

The Braves have Michael Harris II leading off and Drake Baldwin batting fifth against Brewers lefty Shane Drohan on Sunday.

Dropping Baldwin from the top of the order against lefties seems like the right call. Harris is sort of a surprising choice to lead off against a lefty, but he has been pretty successful against them this year, hitting .281/.319/.468. Harris has been batting cleanup against righties and fifth or sixth versus lefties.
