Will Smith (neck) likely out through All-Star break

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters he expects Will Smith (neck) to remain out through the upcoming All-Star break.

There was optimism that Smith would make it back to Los Angeles at some point in early July, but those odds seemed to get longer in recent weeks while Smith remained shut down from baseball activities. The 31-year-old is working his way back from neck inflammation and the Dodgers have zero incentive to rush him and risk any setbacks. There should be a clearer timeline at some point in the coming weeks. It’ll be former top prospect Dalton Rushing continuing to handle the bulk of the catching duties for the Dodgers.
Skenes wins second straight start after slide
Dave Flemming, Tim Dillard, and Bob Walk reveal their top takeaways from the Pirates' impressive three-game sweep of the Brewers, capped off by a blowout win on Sunday where Paul Skenes won his second straight start.

Leody Taveras went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI on Sunday afternoon, leading the Orioles to an 8-2 victory over the visiting Royals.

Taveras got the Orioles on the board in the second inning, tagging right-hander Seth Lugo for a 448-foot (107.8-mph EV) two-run shot that gave the O’s a 2-1 advantage. He then put his squad on top to stay with an RBI single in the sixth inning before coming around to score on a balk. With his two-hit afternoon, the dynamic 27-year-old outfielder finishes the first half hitting .237/.314/.364 with four homers, 34 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 290 plate appearances.

Samuel Basallo went 1-for-5 and clobbered a solo home run on Sunday as the Orioles dispatched of the Royals in their first half finale.

The 21-year-old backstop did his damage off of Lucas Erceg in the seventh inning, crushing a 1-1 changeup for a 404-foot (105.0-mph EV) solo shot that increased the Orioles’ lead to 8-2. Basallo has been a very valuable contributor for the O’s and for fantasy managers in the first half, slashing a healthy .249/.310/.465 with 16 homers and 46 RBI in 300 plate appearances.

Gunnar Henderson went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI as the Orioles topped the Royals on Sunday afternoon in Baltimore.

He then contributed an RBI single and scored on an RBI knock by Pete Alonso during the Orioles’ five-run rally in the sixth inning. He also singled to open the eighth inning. The 25-year-old infielder finishes the first half hitting .224/.294/.403 with 17 long balls, 43 RBI and seven stolen bases through his first 439 plate appearances.

Shane Baz racked up nine strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Royals on Sunday afternoon in Baltimore.

Baz allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits in the ballgame and did not allow a base on balls. The Royals scratched out single runs against him in the second and third innings, but Baz was able to evade any further damage. He couldn’t get the final out in the fifth inning though, and was ultimately pulled at 104 pitches after allowing a two-out double to Lane Thomas. He got a whopping 19 swings and misses on the afternoon — seven on his fastball and six on his knuckle curve — while posting a CSW of 28 percent. The 27-year-old righty wraps up his first half with a 4-9 record, 4.11 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and a 99/42 K/BB ratio over 111 2/3 innings in his 19 starts.

Lane Thomas went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI on Sunday afternoon, but it wasn’t enough to lead the Royals past the Orioles in their first half finale.

Thomas smacked an RBI single off of Shane Baz in the third inning that briefly tied the game at two runs apiece, that would wind up being the extent of the Royals’ offense though. The 30-year-old outfielder has seen his bat heat up over the past few weeks, but he still heads to the break slashing an underwhelming .234/.335/.390 to go along with seven homers, 31 RBI and four stolen bases across 269 plate appearances.

Seth Lugo pitched decently in a no-decision against the Orioles on Sunday afternoon, giving up two runs on four hits in just four innings of work.

Lugo piled up six strikeouts on the afternoon while walking two batters. He struggled with his command though, needing 89 pitches to navigate four innings, which caused his early exit. The damage done against him came on a two-run blast by Leody Taveras in the second inning. Lugo got 11 swings and misses on the afternoon, posting a CSW of 31 percent. He wraps up an inconsistent first half with a 4.56 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and an 86/34 K/BB ratio over 104 2/3 innings through his first 19 starts.

James Wood hit a leadoff homer in a loss to the Yankees on Sunday.

Wood homered in all three games against the Yankees, and he hit a leadoff shot in back-to-back games. He also drew a pair of walks, and he ends the first half with 28 homers, 64 RBI and an excellent .279/.410/.575 slash over 96 games with 15 steals for good measure. That’ll work.

Ben Rice hit a two-run triple to help the Yankees to a 5-3 win over the Nationals on Sunday.

Rice is not exactly known for his speed, but he already has three triples on the season, and this one was a big one as it turned a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 cushion The 27-year-old was outstanding in the first half, and the Home Run Derby participant has now driven in 68 runs in 2026. Some regression is certainly possible — baseball is hard — but everything Rice has shown over the first few months suggest this is legit.

Paul Blackburn worked two innings to pick up a save against the Nationals on Sunday while not allowing a run.

It’s the first save of the season for Blackburn, and while not guaranteed to be the last, there’s a pretty decent chance it is. The 32-year-old has done a nice job for New York in his action out of the bullpen, and the pair of scoreless frames lower his ERA to 2.22.
