Robert Suarez dealing with forearm tightness

Suarez has been battling tightness in his forearm for the past few days and rather than continuing to play short-handed, they opted to shut him down and make sure that he gets right. Hurston Waldrep was activated from the injured list to take Suarez’s spot on the club’s active roster on Friday.

Iglesias landed on the injured list on April 21st, so he hasn’t been sidelined for too long. He will return to his late-inning role in the Braves’ bullpen. Given that Igleasias is dealing with a shoulder issue, we wouldn’t go ahead and drop Robert Suarez right away. It makes sense to see how Iglesias looks for a performance or two before moving on from Suarez in fantasy leagues.

It’s possible the Braves could have Iglesias set up for Robert Suarez in his first appearance or two back from shoulder inflammation, but Iglesias figures to reclaim his job, even if Suarez has been outstanding this season.

Suarez made sure that the Braves’ comeback bid didn’t go for naught, as he pitched around a one-out single from Ezequiel Tovar to work a scoreless frame and put the game in the win column for the Braves. He has proven to be more than capable in the ninth inning while Raisel Iglesias has been sidelined and now sports a minuscule 0.66 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and a 14/2 K/BB ratio over 13 2/3 innings on the season while converting each of his first four save chances.

It sounds like Atlanta is going to get their primary closer back next week since Iglesias will skip a minor league rehab assignment altogether. The 36-year-old veteran stopper hit the shelf with shoulder inflammation last week. His return would push Robert Suarez back to a setup role.

Suarez remains the top option to fill the Braves’ closer role as long as Iglesias is sidelined.

The 36-year-old hurler has yet to resume throwing, but the Braves have been encouraged by his progress and don’t believe that he’ll be facing an extended absence. Robert Suarez will continue to hold down the fort in the ninth inning in the meantime.

Suarez will be filling in for Raisel Iglesias for the next couple of weeks, but that just makes the eighth a little dicey for the Braves; they’ll still be just fine in the ninth. Suarez, who saved 40 games for the Padres last season, has allowed one run in 10 2/3 innings to begin the year.
