Carlos Santana is signing a minor league deal with the Braves, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Santana didn’t seem to have much in the tank left last year, but he didn’t get a real shot with the Diamondbacks after playing in eight games at the beginning of the season and then getting released upon returning from an adductor strain. The Braves could go to him as a part-timer at some point if Dominic Smith continues to fade.

As reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Saturday evening, the 40-year-old slugger joins the Braves on a minor league deal. He’ll report to Triple-A Gwinnett where he’ll function as insurance in the even that Dominic Smith’s recent struggles continue. Santana was just 2-for-24 (.083) with eight strikeouts in his limited action with the Diamondbacks before being released on Friday.

The 40-year-old slugger was designated for assignment earlier in the week. He hasn’t played since April 5 due to a right adductor injury and has not performed well on his minor league rehab assignment. He’s now free to explore other opportunities if he chooses to do so.

Santana (right adductor) hasn’t played since April 5th and has not looked good during his rehab assignment. The 40-year-old was just 2-for-24 for Arizona before suffering his injury. With no room for him on the active roster, the Diamondbacks have decided to move on.

Santana was removed from the game in the sixth inning, but the Diamondbacks could have very well just decided they didn’t want their 40-year-old first baseman to withstand any more abuse. Santana has been on the IL since April 7th with a groin injury and then suffered an oblique strain in early May while beginning a rehab assignment. In the meantime, Pavin Smith has returned to the Diamondbacks lineup, so it remains to be seen what happens to Santana’s playing time when he does return.

Santana, 40, will begin his rehab assignment at the lowest level. The veteran infielder will likely need a couple of weeks of games in the minors before being an option near the end of June for the Diamondbacks.
  • ATL Designated Hitter #8
Smith came into this game without a hit in more than a week and was stuck in his first slump of the season. It seems like he ended that decisively with his two-run shot in this one that more or less ended Pirates’ starter Braxton Ashcraft’s outing and more or less put this game away. Still starting against all right-handed pitchers the Braves face, Smith has had a magnificent season to this point with six home runs, 28 RBI, a .309 batting average, and an .830 OPS through 52 games.

The procedural move frees up a spot on Arizona’s 40-man roster to bring Pavin Smith back from the 60-day injured list. Santana is facing a lengthy absence after suffering another adductor strain while on a minor league rehab assignment back in mid-May.

No surprise here with lefty Ranger Suárez, who has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this season, toeing the rubber at Fenway Park. The 30-year-old, who has been an unexpected revelation for the first-place Braves this season, could wind up sitting out the entire series against his former club with young lefties Connelly Early and Payton Tolle set to take the ball for the final two games. Eli White takes a turn at DH on Tuesday night in his place.
  • ATL Designated Hitter #8
Smith’s first “home run” of the game knocked out Marlins’ starter Janson Junk and put an exclamation point on a five-run sixth inning that broke this game open. His second “home run” was technically a triple because Owen Caissie and Esteury Ruiz collided in the outfield, but Smith still crushed it in the gap. It’s a bit shocking to see his .337 batting average, .903 OPS and five home runs through 40 games played as a key cog for the resurgent Braves.

Smith was a lineup fixture against right-handers while Sean Murphy was out, but last week, he was twice on the bench versus righties so that Drake Baldwin could DH while Murphy caught. That won’t be an issue again for a little while now, as Murphy returned to the injured list today with a finger fracture. Smith is batting .363/.391/.550 in 88 plate appearances this season.

Hunter Greene (elbow) told reporters on Monday that he’ll make his season debut later this week.

Greene will make his long-awaited season debut either Friday or Saturday against the Orioles. The hard-throwing 26-year-old fantasy ace got his pitch count up to 82 (54 strikes) across 6 1/3 innings during his final rehab outing for Triple-A Louisville over the weekend. His return should provide a massive jolt to Cincinnati’s rotation, and a big lift for fantasy managers as well. He’s been out since undergoing surgery to remove bone chips and loose bodies from his elbow back in early March.

Emilio Pagán (hamstring) will be activated for Tuesday’s game against the Brewers.

Pagán wrapped up a minor league rehab assignment over the weekend and will regain his role as Cincinnati’s closer. The 35-year-old veteran stopper has been out since early May working his way back from a hamstring strain. He should be rostered in all fantasy leagues based on his track record and minimal in-house competition with the Reds.

Rangers signed RHP Chris Paddack to a one-year contract.

Paddack can be safely ignored in all fantasy formats after compiling a bloated 6.96 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 39/19 K/BB ratio across 53 innings between the Reds and Marlins this season. The 30-year-old augments the Rangers starting pitching situation and will likely wind up eating innings in a mop-up role.

Rangers selected the contract of INF/OF Cameron Cauley from Triple-A Round Rock.

Cauley is an interesting prospect for fantasy managers in deeper mixed leagues since he offers a ton of defensive versatility and a little bit of power/speed combo intrigue. The 23-year-old has put together an impressive season on the doorstep of the big leagues, slashing .262/.363/.407 with eight homers and 29 steals in 343 plate appearances over 74 games at the Triple-A level. He’s a name to watch closely, especially if he’s able to carve out a semi-regular role with the Rangers.

Rangers designated OF Jarred Kelenic for assignment.

Kelenic’s stint with the Rangers wound up lasting just over one week where he finished 1-for-8 at the dish across seven games. The 26-year-old former top prospect figures to pass through waivers unclaimed and will likely wind up electing free agency to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

Rangers designated RHP Joe Ross for assignment.

Ross loses his spot in the Rangers bullpen with Cameron Cauley and Chris Paddack being added to the club’s active roster. The 33-year-old journeyman allowed five runs over eight innings during five appearances for Texas after being called up back on June 13.

Addison Barger (elbow) has been diagnosed with a stress reaction in his back and will be shut down from baseball activities for a couple weeks.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters Barger suffered the injury while ramping up his hitting progression as he worked his way back from elbow inflammation. The 26-year-old has been limited to just nine games this season due to injury and won’t make it back until well into the second half following this latest setback.

Jose Altuve (leg) is in the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Twins.

Altuve is back at second base and hitting leadoff following a one-game absence due to a minor leg issue. The 36-year-old veteran second baseman was a bit shaken up on a hard slide during Saturday’s contest against the Tigers, but appears ready to roll after some extra time off.

Cam Smith (foot) is in the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Twins.

Smith is patrolling right field and hitting sixth after fouling a ball off his foot over the weekend. The 23-year-old former top prospect didn’t end up missing any time since he came off the bench during Sunday’s series finale against Detroit. He’s homered twice in his last six games, but continues to be a liability in the batting average department, which severely limits his realistic fantasy appeal.

Eugenio Suárez (hand) is out of the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Brewers.

It’s challenging to dismiss the possibility of a trip to the injured list despite a CT scan coming back clean on Suarez’s left hand. The 34-year-old veteran was hit by a pitch during Sunday’s series finale against the Pirates but expressed optimism on Monday that he’ll be able to avoid an extended absence after imaging revealed no structural damage. Fantasy managers should prepare to be without Suárez for at least a couple days, but it sounds like he managed to avoid serious injury.
