Eugenio Suárez delivers go-ahead blast in ninth

Glasnow, returning from a back problem, was dominant in striking out eight in the 67-pitch outing last night, but it won’t get him brought back early. The hope is to get him up to five innings next time out. He could then return to face the Braves on Aug. 26 or 27.

Turang is out of the starting lineup for a third straight game, but he’s hoping to be available off the bench tonight. Newcomer Jonathan Ornelas is filling in at second base tonight.

Báez, hitting fifth in his major league debut, took the first pitch he saw deep to center field for a solo homer off Matthew Boyd. Leading off the top of the fourth, he terrorized Boyd once again with a homer to left field. Things got ridiculous in the sixth, as he sent one over the right-field wall for his third home run of the game, making him the first player to ever homer three times in their debut. Already three home runs in, he recorded his first career out in the eighth. With big-time power and speed potential, Báez has wasted no time in proving why he can be a significant difference-maker in fantasy the rest of the way.

Burleson reached on a groundout in the first inning and scored on a home run by Joshua Báez. He then drew a walk to lead off the sixth and scored again before leading off the eighth with a solo homer off Colin Rea. The 27-year-old outfielder is hitting .285/.353/.484 with 20 homers, 68 runs scored, and 86 RBI across 516 plate appearances.

Conforto put the Cubs on the board with a three-run homer off Michael McGreevy in the second inning. After striking out in the fourth inning, he was lifted for a pinch-hitter against a left-handed pitcher in the seventh. The home run was Conforto’s 10th of the season while hitting .232/.322/.459 with 30 RBI across 214 plate appearances.

McGreevy tossed a scoreless first inning, then surrendered a three-run blast to Michael Conforto in the second following a two-out error. All three runs would go down as unearned. McGreevy then settled in nicely, giving the Cardinals four more scoreless innings, ending his day after six with six strikeouts. The 26-year-old right-hander will take a solid 3.48 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and a 91/34 K/BB ratio across 132 innings into a start against the Reds in Cincinnati on Thursday.

Boyd issued a walk and hit a batter to start the first inning. A run would come in to score on a groundout before Joshua Báez took Boyd deep for a two-run blast. After two scoreless innings, Báez got to Boyd once again with a solo shot in the fourth. Pitching in the sixth, Boyd surrendered the third homer of the game for Báez in the rookie’s debut. A solo homer by Blaze Jordan would knock him from the game, ending his day with a 4.02 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and a 68/26 K/BB ratio across 85 pitches. He’ll look to bounce back against the Mariners in Seattle on Friday.

Montgomery ended up with a one-out save last night, though only after Kirby Yates created the save situation by giving up a run and three hits in the ninth. It sounds like Kelly favors Montgomery right now, but it’s been really hard to tell with the Pirates struggling. Weaver has pitched just twice in the 12 days since he was acquired: once with the Pirates down four in the ninth and last night with the team up by five in the eighth. Montgomery hasn’t pitched much either. Last night’s save was his fourth of the year and first since the day Weaver was acquired on Aug. 3.

Basallo has been out since July 22 with shoulder inflammation, but it looks like he’ll be back before the end of next week. Yohel Pozo will probably lose his spot once Basallo is activated.

The Padres are giving Luis Campusano a very rare start at DH with Freddy Fermin catching tonight, so there’s no room for Rengifo against a lefty. The switch-hitting Rengifo is hitting just .213/.283/.278 versus southpaws this season, though he’s at .344/.417/.469 in 37 plate appearances against them since joining the Padres and he’s been better versus lefties over the course of his career.
