Rays signed INF Nick Madrigal to a minor league contract.

Madrigal elected free agency from the Angels on Thursday rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Salt Lake. The 29-year-old infielder hit .273 (12-for-44) with no homers, two RBI, one stolen base and a 7/3 K/BB ratio over 52 plate appearances during his time with the Angels.

James Schiano explains why Roman Anthony's latest Triple-A performance suggests a return to the Red Sox lineup could come as soon as Friday in time for a crucial series against the Yankees in the Bronx.

Royals selected the contract of LHP Anthony Gose from Triple-A Omaha.

Gose held a 4.89 ERA in 39 appearances with Omaha while walking 29 and striking out 58. He’ll be part of the low-leverage plan for the Royals for the time being.

Royals optioned RHP Mason Black to Triple-A Omaha.

Black has a 4.31 ERA in 31 1/3 innings pitched with the Royals this year. He’s mainly been used as a bulk reliever. After throwing two innings yesterday against the Blue Jays he’ll head down to get his arm fresh for his next MLB appearance.

Royals placed Michael Massey (concussion) on the 7-day injured list.

He exited Tuesday’s game with the head injury and will miss most of the next week, at a minimum. Josh Rojas will take his spot on the active roster. Tyler Tolbert could be a sneaky stolen base play if he gets most of the playing time at second base.

Kyle Tucker and Max Muncy are not in Los Angeles’ starting lineup on Thursday against the Braves.

They’ll take a seat against LHP Chris Sale. Alex Call will draw the start and bat seventh for Tucker; this appears to just be a routine day off. Enrique Hernández is playing third for Muncy and Muncy appears to be in some danger of losing at-bats against lefties now that Hernández is back.

The Cincinnati Enquirer’s Gordon Wittenmyer reports Eugenio Suárez and TJ Friedl cleared waivers and will remain with the Reds.

Suárez being claimed by the Diamondbacks or Mariners would have made for a fun story, but instead he’ll finish out the regular season with the Reds. Neither club was willing to pick up approximately $3 million in salary for the 35-year-old slugger.

Gordon Graceffo will open for the Cardinals on Thursday.

It’ll be a bullpen game. Newly-called up Cade Winquest may have the best chance for a bulk role, but that’s not exactly an endorsement of chasing a win with him.

JJ Wetherholt is not in St. Louis’ starting lineup against the Orioles on Thursday.

He’ll get a rest day, with José Fermín shifting to shortstop and recently-activated Ramón Urías at second base against LHP Trevor Rogers.

Abimelec Ortiz is not in Washington’s starting lineup for Thursday’s game against the Rockies.

Terribly unfortunate to miss a start against RHP Gabriel Hughes, who is 0-5 with a 6.54 ERA. Andrés Chaparro will draw the assignment instead. It’s the first day off for Ortiz in the last six.

Hunter Goodman and Mickey Moniak aren’t in Colorado’s starting lineup against the Nationals on Thursday.

Both will miss a chance to face RHP Jake Irvin. Zac Veen and Brett Sullivan will get the call. This is likely just a normal rest day for Goodman as a catcher in a day-game-after-a-night-game situation.

He’ll be tasked with throwing three innings in some game in the next week, then likely optioned down again.
