A’s promote Joshua Kuroda-Grauer from Triple-A

Athletics selected the contract of INF Joshua Kuroda-Grauer from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Kuroda-Grauer earns his first promotion to the majors after hitting .323/.367/.478 with seven homers and 15 steals in 365 plate appearances over 75 games for Triple-A Las Vegas. He doesn’t offer a ton of over-the-fence pop, but he’s consistently made excellent swing decisions in the upper minors. The 23-year-old rookie figures to get a look at shortstop, and several other infield spots, while starter Jacob Wilson is on the injured list with a thumb issue. He’s at second base and hitting ninth against the Dodgers in his big-league debut on Monday night.

Joshua Kuroda-Grauer opened up his MLB career with three hits, including a double, and an RBI against the Dodgers on Monday.

None of Kuroda-Grauer’s hits came on hard-hit balls. In fact, his 93-mph groundout in the third was his hardest-hit ball of the night. Still, he placed everything well. Kuroda-Grauer figures to mostly play against lefties for now, but if he excels, he could tempt the A’s to move on from Jeff McNeil. He should be in the lineup again Tuesday against Justin Wrobleski.

Royals signed RHP Scott Barlow to a minor-league contract.

Barlow carried a 6.48 ERA and 1.35 WHIP across 33 1/3 innings with the Athletics this year. The Royals pen has been rough enough that we suppose anything is on the table eventually for Barlow, but the 33-year-old wouldn’t seem to have an easy path to a roster spot just yet.

Red Sox manager Chad Tracy said the team could activate Patrick Sandoval (elbow/biceps) if he feels good coming off his rehab start on Saturday.

After sending Early Connelly to the IL, the Red Sox won’t need a fifth starter until July 11, so this may only wind up being a one-game trial for whoever gets the elevation. Tracy said the team would choose either Sandoval or Brayan Bello. That said, the context of Sandoval nearing the end of his 30-day rehab window for players on the IL sure makes it seem like Sandoval will be the first choice if he escapes his Saturday start feeling well.

Yan has a 3.78 ERA between two levels with the Mets this year, with an astonishing 63 strikeouts in just 33 1/3 innings. He still has no control (24 walks accompany the strikeouts) but it’s possible the Mets give him a shake in the bottom of pen mix at some point this summer.

Liam Hendriks threw a scoreless inning for Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday, striking out two.

Hendriks made his debut for the Cubs after signing a minor league deal with them on May 13th. The 37-year-old sat 94.2 mph on his four-seam fastball and got five whiffs on eight total swings, mostly with his slider. Fastball command and velocity will be crucial for Hendriks if he wants to pitch meaningful innings in the Cubs’ bullpen.
