Heliot Ramos homers, triples against D-backs

Ramos had been sidelined since mid-May due to a quad strain. He looked good during an extended rehab assignment at Triple-A Sacramento though and will return to the Giants’ lineup as the designated hitter on Sunday against Chris Sale and the Braves.

Ramos, out since May 16 with a quad strain, has gone 7-for-23 with a homer in six minor league games, which is likely two or three more than he would have played in if the Giants were more excited about getting him back. There aren’t going to be enough at-bats to go around with both Ramos and Victor Bericoto on the roster, so sending down Bericoto seems the likely option. Even though he’s one of the Giants’ best hitters, Ramos might just be a part-timer while everyone is healthy. Starting Ramos, Jung Hoo Lee and Casey Schmitt together in the outfield isn’t something the team will be able to do too often.

Ramos has gone 6-for-15 in four games at Triple-A with four strikeouts and three walks. While his four home runs were a bit underwhelming in 44 games for the Giants to start the season, he had a 13.4 percent barrel rate and nearly 49 percent hard-hit rate while posting an above-average zone contact rate. His groundball rate was too high, which could be an issue he’s working on as he recovers from his quad injury. We’d still bank on a solid second half for the 26-year-old outfielder.

Ramos’s return will complicate the playing time situation in San Francisco with Bryce Eldridge starting regularly and Casey Schmitt replacing Ramos in left. The Giants are hopeful that the injection will take care of the quad strain that Ramos had been battling and that he’ll be able to start building back up after resting for a week. As of now there’s no clear timeline for a potential return to the Giants’ lineup.
