Tanner Scott struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth for a save in a one-run game Friday against the Padres.

Scott struck out Samad Taylor on nine pitches, Miguel Andujar on three and Fernando Tatis Jr. on six. In his last eight appearances, he’s allowed three hits, walked none and fanned 13 over eight scoreless innings. The Dodgers did need him to finish up Thursday as well, so he’ll probably be unavailable Saturday. Edgardo Henriquez has also worked back-to-back days, so perhaps Alex Vesia could wind up with a save.

Royals signed RHP Vince Velasquez to a minor league contract.

The 34-year-old righty elected free agency at the end of June rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Iowa from the Cubs. He adds extra pitching depth for the Royals and should get an opportunity with the big league club in relatively short order.

Diamondbacks recalled OF Ryan Waldschmidt from Triple-A Reno.

As anticipated, Waldschmidt gets another opportunity with the big league club with Pavin Smith being designated for assignment on Friday. The 23-year-old has focused on cutting down his strikeout rate at the Triple-A level, and if that can translate with the Diamondbacks he could hit wind up having some mixed league viability, especially with his upside in the stolen base department.

Diamondbacks designated 1B/OF Pavin Smith for assignment.

Diamondbacks’ fans have been clamoring for this move for months as Smith has struggled to a horrifying .141/.236/.192 slash line with just one homer, six RBI and an 18/10 K/BB ratio over 89 plate appearances. It’s possible that he could attract some attention on waivers. Ryan Waldschmidt was recalled from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move to take his spot on the Diamondbacks’ roster.

Astros designated INF Braden Shewmake for assignment.

Shewmake was just activated from the injured list on Monday and now he loses his spot on the roster to accommodate the return of shortstop Jeremy Peña. He has proven to be a capable reserve infielder, which could be enough to pique another team’s interest on waivers.

Astros activated INF Jeremy Peña from the 10-day injured list

Peña had been shelved since June 30 due to a mild calf strain. Prior to landing on the injured list, he was hitting .295/.356/.443 with six homers, 21 RBI and eight stolen bases across 202 plate appearances. Braden Shewmake was designated for assignment in a corresponding move on Friday.

Bo Bichette is not in the Mets’ starting lineup for Friday night’s showdown against the Red Sox.

It’s nothing more than a routine night off for the 28-year-old infielder. Brett Baty will slide over and cover the hot corner while Zack Short draws a rare start at second base and will bat ninth for the Mets against Red Sox’ right-hander Sonny Gray on Friday evening in New York — assuming that the Red Sox eventually arrive.

Shohei Ohtani (knee) was scratched from his scheduled start against the Dodgers on Friday due to continued irritation in his left knee.

The Dodgers also announced that the 32-year-old two-way superstar will not play in next week’s All-Star Game in Philadelphia. It doesn’t sound like there are any plans to place Ohtani on the injured list, and the plan as of now is to have him continue serving as the club’s designated hitter for their weekend set against the Diamondbacks. It just may keep him off of the mound for a while.

Jackson Chourio is not in Milwaukee’s starting lineup for Friday’s game against the Pirates.

It appears to just be a routine day off. Luis Lara is playing left field in Chourio’s absence on Friday, as he’s now spelled in center field, right field, and now left field in three of the last four games. It’s plausible Lara is going to be a governor on any of the other Brewers outfielders seeing full-time action, especially with their sizable lead in the NL Central.

Athletics recalled 1B Joey Meneses from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Meneses hit .143/.278/.143 in 18 plate appearances with the Athletics earlier this year, and the Quad-A slugger is hitting .347/.398/.550 in Triple-A Vegas over 327 plate appearances. He’ll give the Athletics a bench bat over the weekend, perhaps spelling Nick Kurtz for a game if Kurtz’s illness lingers.

Athletics placed INF Zack Gelof on the 10-day injured list with a right knee laceration.

Gelof cut his knee up pretty bad on a sliding catch last night in Detroit. Gelof had sort of swung between third base, second base, and left field since returning from the IL a few days ago, pushing Jeff McNeil (illness) into a bench role. McNeil will likely be more involved at second base over the weekend, pushing Joshua Kuroda-Grauer to third.
