Pirates selected the contract of RHP Noah Murdock from Triple-A Indianapolis; optioned him to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Murdock had an upward mobility clause in his minor league deal with the Pirates, so they opted to put him on their 40-man roster to keep him within the organization. The 27-year-old hurler has posted a 4.11 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and a 39/9 K/BB ratio over 30 2/3 innings in 24 appearances across three minor league levels this season.

James Schiano explores what fantasy managers should make of Heliot Ramos' massive performance on Monday against the Blue Jays, including why he can be a valuable addition off waivers.

Murdock represents an interesting gamble for the Pirates since he was a Rule 5 pick by the Athletics last offseason and made 14 underwhelming relief appearances, registering an astronomical 13.24 ERA during that span, before being returned to the Royals by mid-May. The 27-year-old hurler produced a solid 3.16 ERA and 72/41 K/BB ratio over 62 2/3 innings during 46 relief outings in the upper minors after returning to Kansas City.

Murdock passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment last Friday and will return to Kansas City’s organization. The 26-year-old righty struggled in 14 relief appearances this season with the Athletics after coming over in the offseason Rule 5 Draft.

If the Rule 5 selection passes through waivers unclaimed, he would be returned to the Royals. If another team claims him, then the same rules apply, and he needs to remain on the big league roster for the duration of the season or be returned to the Royals. Murdock posted a 13.24 ERA, 2.71 WHIP and a 21/20 K/BB ratio over 17 innings in 14 appearances with the A’s.

Murdock was a Rule 5 draft pick by the A’s in December from the Royals, so the Athletics have to keep the 26-year-old on the roster for the entire season. He’ll likely be a low-leverage reliever to begin the season, but could work into a more relevant role by the end of the campaign.

Murdock is a product of Virginia who forged a 3.16 ERA over 46 appearances; the last 30 of those in Triple-A with Omaha. The Athletics will give him a chance to earn one of the final spots in their bullpen to begin 2025.

Jakob Marsee delivered a game-winning single in the 10th inning on Tuesday, lifting the Marlins to a 6-5 walk-off win over the Mariners.

Marsee ended a bizarre back-and-forth affair at loanDepot park by depositing a single into shallow right field to send the red-hot Marlins to an extra-inning victory in walk-off fashion. The 25-year-old outfielder finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the contest.

Cole Young belted his 10th home run of the season on Tuesday in an extra-inning loss to the Marlins.

Young took Marlins ace Max Meyer deep in the fifth inning to help jumpstart Seattle’s comeback effort. It was his lone hit in three at-bats and third long ball in his last seven games.

Max Meyer allowed two runs over five innings on Tuesday in a no-decision against the Mariners.

Meyer was cruising early on in this one, holding Seattle to just a pair of runs into the sixth inning before being pulled after loading the bases with nobody out. He finished with four strikeouts and issued two walks. Fortunately, reliever Michael Petersen came on to put out the bases-loaded fire without any runs crossing the plate. The 27-year-old All-Star righty holds a strong 2.58 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 116/38 K/BB ratio across 108 innings of work. He’ll get the ball for Sunday’s first-half finale against the Guardians.

Bryan Woo was charged with four runs — three earned — over five innings on Tuesday in a no-decision against the Marlins.

Woo’s struggles on the road persisted in this one as he surrendered nine hits, including a second-inning solo shot to rookie Owen Caissie. He finished with five strikeouts and only issued one walk.

Ryan O’Hearn turned in a career game Tuesday against the Braves, going 4-for-5 with three home runs and 10 RBI.

It’s the eighth three-homer game this year and first by a Pirate since Liover Peguero, of all people, had one at Coors Field last August. The last Pirate to hit three homers at PNC Park wasn’t any more famous; Michael Pérez did that in 2022. O’Hearn is the first Pirate ever to drive in 10 runs in a game. Johnny Rizzo held the team record with nine in a game in 1939. Jason Bay drove in eight for the team twice, and Andrew McCutchen did it once. It’s the second 10-RBI game of the decade, joining Shohei Ohtani’s 6-for-6, three-homer masterpiece on Sept. 19, 2024. O’Hearn is suddenly ninth in the majors with 61 RBI, even though he spent two weeks on the IL in May.

Paul Skenes pitched two-run ball for six innings Tuesday in a victory over the Braves.

Skenes was hardly dominant in striking out four and giving up eight hits, but very importantly, his stuff rebounded some tonight. He averaged 97.1 mph with his fastball. That 0.8 mph better than his season low from an ugly start against the Phillies last week, and his first time over 97 since May 28. His fastball spin rate was also back up to 2,150 rpm. He exceeded that mark in each of his first 14 starts, but he was below it his last four times out, bottoming out at 1,988 last week. So, that’s encouraging. The Skenes of 2025 probably isn’t walking through that door Sunday against the Brewers, but the bleeding seems to have stopped. He’s 7-8 with a 3.58 ERA.

Hurston Waldrep was roughed up for seven runs in 3 1/3 innings Tuesday in a loss to the Pirates.

The seven runs came on a grand slam from Ryan O’Hearn in the first and a three-run shot from the same batter two innings later. In all, Waldrep allowed six hits, walked five and struck out two. His fastball averaged 93.3 mph tonight, down from 94.6 mph in his previous start. He averaged 95.6 mph last year before his elbow problems arose. It seemed likely that he’d start again Sunday against the Cardinals, but it’s possible the Braves will go in a different direction after this.

Vinnie Pasquantino (hand) went 2-for-3 with an RBI on Tuesday in a minor league rehab game for Triple-A Omaha.

Pasquantino kicked off his rehab assignment by reaching base safely in three of his four plate appearances. The 28-year-old first baseman figures to get a couple additional tune-up contests under his belt before returning to Kansas City later this week. He’s been working his way back from a hamate fracture since mid-June.

Munetaka Murakami (hamstring) went 1-for-3 with a single on Tuesday in a minor league rehab game for Triple-A Charlotte.

Murakami singled in his first at-bat before striking out twice in his rehab debut. The 26-year-old first baseman will probably require a couple additional contests to knock off the rust from an extended layoff before he returns to Chicago’s lineup later this week. He’s been out with a hamstring strain since late May.
