Robert Gasser pitches into eighth in win over STL

Gasser will start Game 2 on Tuesday. The left-hander has a 4.54 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 36/13 K/BB ratio in 35 2/3 innings across seven starts for the Brewers this season. He has pitched better of late, allowing five runs on 13 hits in 17 1/3 innings across his last three starts with a 17/4 K/BB ratio. He’s a decent streamer in deeper formats today.

The option all the way to the ACL is likely a procedural one, as it’s feasible the Brewers need to create a roster spot in Triple-A before they send the 27-year-old to Nashville. The southpaw has pitched decently — if inconsistently — in his time with Milwaukee, and will almost assuredly be back before the summer ends.

Gasser gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out five. A single, a walk and a double got the Reds their first run in the first inning. Two more came against Gasser in the fifth inning when Elly De La Cruz hit a two-run home run. Gasser has a 4.54 ERA. He’s lined up to face the Diamondbacks at home this weekend.

It was thought the Brewers might go back to a five-man rotation next week, but it’s not happening. There’s definitely no sense of urgency. The three possibilities to be dropped have all made four starts with ERAs in the mid-3.00s this month (3.48 for Sproat, 3.65 for Drohan and 3.74 for Gasser).

Sproat appears to be fine after leaving his previous start with a right hamstring cramp. He’s going to remain in Milwaukee’s rotation as they stick with a five-man mix now that Brandon Woodruff is back in the equation. It appears to be lefty Robert Gasser heading to the bullpen as the corresponding move.

Gasser gave up a first-inning run but ended up getting more than enough help fro Milwaukee’s offense, which responded with eight runs, as he completed six innings for the first time since 2024. It seems unlikely he’ll get another turn in the rotation with veteran Brandon Woodruff (shoulder) coming off the injured list, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see Gasser stick around in a multi-inning relief role.

Gasser departed with a 1-0 lead that Aaron Ashby blew in the seventh before Ashby got his 10th win. Gasser is still looking for his first, having gone 0-3 with a 4.88 ERA in his five starts. This was his best showing to date, but it would have been more impressive if the Guardians lineup wasn’t so depleted. If he stays in the rotation, he’ll face the Braves on Sunday. However, the Brewers could have Brandon Woodruff back then.

Gasser gave up a solo homer to Nick Kurtz in the first inning, then a two-run blast to Henry Bolte in the second as the home run barrage in Las Vegas continued on Tuesday. It didn’t stop there. Tyler Soderstrom went yard off Gasser for a two-run shot in the fifth, followed by a solo homer by Jonah Heim. Gasser’s day would be done after five frames. He struck out seven. The 27-year-old left-hander will take a bloated 6.38 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, and a 19/9 K/BB ratio across 18 1/3 innings into a start against the Guardians in Milwaukee on Tuesday.

Gasser struck out five and walked one in his best start across three tries in 2026. His results have been better in Triple-A this year, which Wednesday’s outing more accurately reflected. This was likely just a spot start as Milwaukee pieces the back half of its rotation together series by series. Chad Patrick worked four innings out of the bullpen in a piggyback role on Wednesday.

Gasser draws the starting assignment for Wednesday’s showdown against the Giants at American Family Field after compiling a respectable 3.38 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 38/8 K/BB ratio across 26 2/3 innings over seven starts at Triple-A this season. The 27-year-old southpaw has allowed seven runs over 8 1/3 innings during a pair of starts for the Brewers this year. He offers some streaming appeal in extremely deep mixed leagues since San Francisco has been a middle-of-the-road offense against left-handed pitchers this season. It’ll likely be a one-and-done spot start for Gasser unless Milwaukee decides they’re ready to replace a struggling Brandon Sproat in the rotation.
