Aroldis Chapman throws flawless ninth for save

Lile was batting for Dylan Crews, who hit a ball 407 feet to center on the very first pitch of the bottom of the first. That, though, turned into an out. Once Cristopher Sánchez exited in the seventh, Lile hit in Crews’ place against Jonathan Bowlan and sent another ball 407 feet, but this one was about 20 feet right of Crews’ shot and sailed over the wall. It was Lile’s 21st homer of the year. He was hitting .132/.195/.263 in 11 games this month.

Seager drove in two runs on a bases-loaded single in the second inning, part of a four-run inning in which the Rangers scored all of their runs in the game. He later added a base hit in the fifth. The 32-year-old shortstop has enjoyed a hot second half, hitting .298 since the All-Star break.

Kent left a 3-3 game before the Nationals scored three times off Cristopher Sánchez in the seventh, so it was a no-decision for the rookie. He’s still 1-4 with a 6.40 ERA and an unimpressive 27/23 K/BB in 32 1/3 innings over seven turns. The Nationals will likely have him face the Tigers on Monday.

Tolman gave up three hard-hit balls, but all turned into outs, with third baseman Brady House making a jumping catch on a J.T. Realmuto liner to end the game. Tolman, who just made his MLB debut on Aug. 22, has three of the Nationals’ last four saves, and it looks like he’ll finish out the year as their primary closer.

Even with two pickoffs of baserunners and no James Wood or CJ Abrams in the lineup Sánchez stumbled some against the Nationals, losing for the second time in three outings this month. The last two runs came after he departed in the seventh, as Jonathan Bowlan immediately gave up a three-run homer after taking over. This leaves Sánchez 17-6 with a 2.93 ERA on the season. He’ll try bounce back Sunday against the Mets. Last time he faced them, it turned into a 15-1 win for the Phillies.

Both hits came off Cristopher Sánchez. Chaparro has slowed down some, but his .258/.356/.517 line through 205 plate appearances is still awfully nice, and he’s back playing a little more of late; he’s started four of the Nationals’ last five games after being included in the lineup in just three of the previous seven games.

Benge’s home run was his 18th of the season. He hit a solo shot off Shane Baz in the third inning. Benge has two home runs in his last four games. He’s hitting .272 with a .752 OPS and 58 RBI this year.

Sogard put the Red Sox on the board with their only runs of the day, taking Jacob deGrom deep for a two-run homer in the third inning. The 29-year-old second baseman is hitting .264/.360/.416 with five homers, 28 runs scored, and 19 RBI across 233 plate appearances.

Latz was summoned with one out in the eighth inning with two runners on, tasked with getting the Rangers out of the jam and preserving a two-run lead. He induced a groundout and struck out the final batter before returning for the ninth and collecting two more strikeouts to complete a five-out save. The 30-year-old left-hander is up to 30 saves with a 2.00 ERA across 67 1/3 innings.

DeGrom kept the Red Sox scoreless through two innings, then gave up a two-run homer to Nick Sogard in the third. He bounced back to strike out the side in the fourth, then stranded the bases loaded in the fifth. DeGrom’s day would be done after five innings at 92 pitches with eight strikeouts. The 38-year-old right-hander will take a 3.79 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and a 194/39 K/BB ratio across 154 1/3 innings into a start against the Blue Jays in Texas on Sunday.
