Padres selected South Walton HS (FL) RHP Coleman Borthwick with the No. 21 selection of the 2026 MLB Draft.

There was some talk that Borthwick was likely to honor his college commitment to Auburn, but that doesn’t seem very likely now. Borthwick is a 6-foot-6, 245-pound right-hander who shows a plus fastball and slider, and his command has made strikes — with plenty of time as an 18-year-old to reach the necessary level to be a starter. There’s a long way to go, but Borthwick has the size and stuff to potentially pitch near the top of a rotation someday.

He’s been even worse while losing each of his last four starts, posting a 9.67 ERA and striking out just 11 in 22 1/3 innings. He’s on a one-year, $22.05 million contract after struggling to find a multiyear deal in free agency last winter.
