Cardinals’ Scott Blewett exercised opt-out clause

Sugano, 36, kept the ball in the park, but he allowed nine hits and a walk while striking out two. The right-hander has a solid 12-7 record, but he’s not deserving of that mark — for the most part, anyway — with an ERA of 4.96. It would be a considerable mistake in process to stream him against Atlanta this weekend.

It’s the 15th win of the season for Griffin. He struck out four. It’s Mahle’s shortest outing in four starts for the Braves, but he lowered his ERA for his new club to 1.52. He’ll be a great play at home against the Rockies next weekend.

Pitching with a two-run lead, Iglesias walked Brice Turang to start the ninth and then gave up a long fly to William Contreras that Michael Harris II made a jumping catch on at the wall. According to Statcast, it would have been a homer in seven ballparks. After that, Iglesias got a comebacker from Jake Bauers that turned into a game-ending double play, even though he made a bad throw to second to start it off. It’s his 27th save of the season and No. 280 for his career.

Drohan was making his first start in 10 days after making a two-inning relief appearance Tuesday. He’ll probably pitch again next Sunday against the Rangers, which is a solid matchup. He’s allowed two or three runs in seven of his last nine starts.

Velázquez rejected the assignment and became a free agent. He went 0-for-4 in three games for the Astros after previously hitting .216/.289/.432 in 83 plate appearances for the Cardinals this season.

Mitchell was hurt when he was hit by a pitch on a bunt attempt in the fourth. The Brewers have Monday off and face a lefty on Tuesday, so Mitchell will have some time to rest.

Bericoto left the game against the Red Sox after his knee hit the side wall in left while he was attempting a catch in foul territory. Initial examinations didn’t turn up anything serious, so consider him day-to-day for now.

The IL might be a possibility here. It’s poor timing for Adames, as he says his back has started feeling a lot better in recent days. Christian Koss will likely start at shortstop while Adames is out.
