Max Muncy’s clutch homer downs Yankees

Bradish allowed four hits, walked one and struck out four on a cool 10 days’ rest tonight. He was originally supposed to pitch Sunday but was pushed back after signing his five-year extension Saturday and then his scheduled start Tuesday was rained out. Bradish is 4-2 with a 2.03 ERA in his last six starts. He’ll pitch in Detroit next week.

Rivera was wild and just not good at all, but he probably would have gotten out of the first unscathed if not for Caleb Durbin making a bad call on a grounder to third with one out. Durbin could have ran to third for a forceout or thrown to first, but he instead tried for an unlikely double play and didn’t get any outs. Rivera struck out the next batter, but then just couldn’t get a third out afterwards. He might head back to Triple-A after this.

Bello was almost certainly going to pitch tonight, but it wasn’t supposed to happen in the first, as the Red Sox were surely counting on two or three innings from Rivera before things got messy. Bello stepped in and did a great job of cleaning up, but Boston never did get back into the game. Bello has allowed one run over 9 2/3 innings in his two appearances since being recalled just before the break. It’s still possible that he’ll return to Triple-A at some point, but he’s certainly making a case for sticking around.

Beavers’ start tonight was just his third against a left-hander this season (the Red Sox threw lefties in both games), and his big hit came off Eduardo Rivera in the first, as he singled in two with a drive to center. Beavers is hitting .248/.329/.366 in 165 plate appearances. He still has some work to do to set himself apart in the Orioles’ outfield mix, but it’s not like anyone else is busting out, either.

Gallegos added that De Vries is not being promoted to the majors. There’s always rampant social media speculation when a top prospect is abruptly scratched from a lineup, which is what happened with De Vries at Double-A Midland on Wednesday night. The 19-year-old prodigy has a chance to be a real difference-maker for the Athletics after coming over as the crown jewel in the Mason Miller trade with the Padres last year. However, it would be extremely surprising if he were promoted in the final two months, especially with the Athletics fading from the playoff picture.

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Walls is probably going to need a couple days off after hyperextending a couple fingers on his left hand while sliding into second base during Wednesday’s contest in Toronto.

Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly told reporters Marchán suffered the injury on a swing and will undergo imaging to determine the severity of the issue. The club is probably going to have to scramble to bring in a backup catcher behind starter J.T. Realmuto with Garrett Stubbs (wrist) already on the injured list.

Anthony Volpe then singled in Domínguez to make it 2-0. Domínguez also went 1-for-4 with a walk in game one. He’s not embarrassing himself in hitting .232/.270/.394 in 164 plate appearances, but he’s still not showing much in the way of upside at the plate, and it’s hard to say what the Yankees could realistically expect to get for him if they make him available at the deadline.

Working on a limit of about 60 pitches in his return from a bone bruise in his elbow, Fried got through five in 57, 37 of which were strikes, and averaged 96.2 mph with his fastball, which was 1.5 mph better than his season average. He left a scoreless game, so there was no win to be had. However, it was an awfully encouraging showing. He’ll get the White Sox next.

Warren would have started Tuesday’s game before it was rained out. Tonight, he was the closer instead, after David Bednar and Fernando Cruz pitched in game one, but he was replaced by the lefty Hill with two on and Ryan O’Hearn up. O’Hearn went on to ground out. Warren still figures to get a start this weekend against the Phillies. He might permanently lose his rotation spot later if Carlos Rodón comes back and everyone else remains healthy.
